  • Dharana; One Pointed Attention
    2026/08/28

    What has your attention?

Dharana, the sixth limb of yoga, is the practice of concentration—learning to gather the mind and gently return it to one point. In this episode, we explore why concentration isn't about forcing the mind to be still, but about developing the ability to choose where we place our attention. Through a beautiful Zen story about an archer and a simple practice focused on the rising and falling of the belly, we'll explore what happens when we stop trying so hard and simply learn to stay.

  • Pratyahara; Turning Inward
    2026/08/23

    Pratyahara: Turning Inward

Pratyahara is often described as the withdrawal of the senses—but what does that actually mean in practice? In this episode, we explore pratyahara as the intentional turning inward of our attention, not a rejection of the sensory world, but a way of becoming less governed by it. We’ll look at simple ways to quiet the senses, from closing the eyes and covering the ears to noticing the thoughts and memories that can pull our attention outward. As the senses become quieter, we create space to experience something deeper: the stillness that is already within us.

  • Pranayama; The Breath of Life
    2026/08/16

In this episode of 8 Limb Life, we explore the fourth limb of yoga: Pranayama. We move beyond simply “taking a deep breath” and explore how different breathing practices can influence our energy, attention, and inner state.

    We introduce:

    • Three-Part Breath — expanding awareness and creating space in the breath
    • Ujjayi — the ocean breath, cultivating steadiness and presence
    • Bhastrika — the bellows breath, awakening energy and generating heat
    • Breath of Fire — rhythmic and activating, stirring vitality
    • Lion’s Breath — releasing tension and inviting expression
    • Sitali — a cooling, soothing breath
    • Nadi Shodhana — alternate nostril breathing for balance and concentration
    • Kumbhaka — breath retention and the doorway into stillness

Pranayama gives us many ways to work with the breath — to energize, calm, balance, focus, release, and ultimately become quiet enough to listen. As the breath settles, the mind can begin to settle too, preparing us for the next limb: Pratyahara, the turning inward of the senses.

Just remember, the breath is always with us. Pranayama invites us to become conscious of the extraordinary practice that is already happening within us, every moment.

  • Asana; More than a Pose
    2026/08/09

Asana is more than the shapes we make with our bodies. In this episode, we explore the deeper meaning of the third limb of yoga—from its original meaning as “seat,” to the physical practice we know today, and ultimately to the steadiness, presence, and quiet awareness that can emerge through movement. We’ll explore how asana brings the wisdom of the yamas and niyamas onto the mat, and how a steady body can create space for a quiet mind and an open heart.

Together, we'll explore why Patanjali organized yoga into eight interconnected limbs, how each one nourishes the others, and why this ancient path remains a powerful roadmap for living with greater presence, clarity, and compassion in the modern world.

  • Svadhyaya
    2026/07/12

What if self-study isn't about fixing yourself, but about learning to witness yourself with honesty and compassion?

In this episode, we explore Svadhyaya, the yogic practice of self-study and self-inquiry. Together, we'll look at the patterns, beliefs, and habits that quietly shape our lives, and discover how awareness itself can become a doorway to transformation.

Through the lens of yoga philosophy and modern life, we'll explore what it means to become the witness, to meet ourselves with curiosity instead of judgment, and to recognize the still, unchanging awareness that exists beneath the constant movement of the mind.

Here is a list of texts that may help support the inquiry of Svadhyaya:

Tao te Ching; interpretation by Stephen Mitchell

    The Bhagavad Gita

    The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

    A New Earth; Eckhart Tolle

The Power of Now; Eckhart Tolle

The Seat of the Soul; Gary Zukav

    Poetry by Mary Oliver

    Poetry by Maya Angelou
