Far to the south of the peaceful Bellwoods, where Jon-Tom the spellsinger continues trying to master the art of turning music into magic, a sinister force has awakened: a magician with great ambition and unheard-of power. San Francisco's only PI with an eye into the supernatural, is having one of those months. Hawk and Fisher are pulled apart by circumstance as a political truce is threatened and the death toll climbs.

When an important politician dies behind a door locked from the inside, Captain Hawk and his wife and partner, Captain Isobel Fisher, must seek the truth amid suspects that include a sorcerer, a witch, the otherworldly creatures they can command and worse: the dead man’s political rivals.  

King Malcom of the kingdom of Redhart is dead. The kingdom has been overrun by the forces of the Unreal. Statues live, corpses walk and nothing is as it seems. After launching an unsuccessful invasion of Washington, DC, the Unified Authority is on the verge of defeat. Then the clones intercept a message detailing the U.A.’s last ditch plan for survival: a super weapon, a virus designed to attack the clones’ internal architecture. Only one clone was created without the fatal flaw — Wayson Harris, an outlaw model with independent thoughts and an addiction to violence.

Smoke Jensen has journeyed up to the Colorado Rockies to a sell a prized bull to a local rancher. Instead, the rancher and his wife have been mercilessly slaughtered by outlaws only moments before Smoke’s arrival. In a hail of bullets, Smoke pulverizes two of the murderers and drags two others to the town of Brown Spur for justice. Come hanging day, the two killers are on the way to the gallows when a thundering gang of raiders crashes into town and rescues them from the jaws of death.
