The Cabman's Story (sub-titled The Mysteries of a London "Growler") is a short story written by Arthur Conan Doyle first published anonymously in the Cassell's Saturday Journal on 17 May 1884. A cabman tells one of his clients three stories he experienced. The first one is about a dead passenger, the second about a passenger with a mysterious box, and the last one tells the story of a passenger who is a terrorist.

It constitutes a series of anecdotal snippets and short stories including 'The Picnic', a laugh-out-loud account of an ill-fated Durrell family excursion, which should have been a relaxing, jolly affair. But with the Durrells things are seldom straightforward and on this occasion all that could go wrong did go wrong – except Gerald Durrell's sense of humour in recounting the tale. Other hilarious and surreal Roald Dahlesque stories ensue, including the critically acclaimed Gothic horror story 'The Entrance'.

Once upon a time, there was a kind and honest man named Hans. He lived alone in a tiny cottage. Hans was a little man who owned a beautiful garden, where he grew flowers of all kinds and colours which were sold in the market to make some money. He enjoyed the company of another man called Hugh, a miller who used to visit Hans very often during the summer time and with whom he shared thoughts about friendship and loyalty. Hans was so devoted to Hugh that he even gifted him whole bunches of flowers from his own garden.

In a town full of suffering poor people, a swallow who was left behind after his flock flew off to Egypt for the winter meets the statue of the late "Happy Prince", who has never experienced true sorrow, for he lived in a palace where sorrow was not allowed to enter. Viewing various scenes of people suffering in poverty from his tall monument, the Happy Prince asks the swallow to take the ruby from his hilt, the sapphires from his eyes, and the gold leaf covering his body to give to the poor.

The old campfire story; that mysterious, dark tall-tale, told, or rather performed, in the midst of the wilderness by the dancing light and shadows of a small campfire, with the indubitable purpose of scaring young campers out of their proverbial wits. While good campfire story tellers could send quivers into the depths of childhood minds, the best performers could impose a freezing terror on their juvenile audiences leaving them with slightly unnerving, yet fond memories of a well-spent summer vacation.
