時事新報社記者時代に湯島天神で偶然見てもらった手相について語るエッセイ。冗談半分に友人の久米や芥川と訪れた境内の易者に見てもらったところ、菊池が三十歳を越えてから栄達し、一群の人の上に立ち、金銭に不自由しなくなることなどが予言された。当時貧乏で文壇に出ることなど夢にも思わなかったが、十年後にはこの予言が悉く適中し、やがて手相に興味を持つようになる。
