Emma Gatewood told her family she was going on a walk and left her small Ohio hometown with a change of clothes and less than $200. The next anybody heard from her, this genteel, farm-reared, 67-year-old great-grandmother had walked 800 miles along the 2,050-mile Appalachian Trail. 宮崎県西部、険しい山の谷あいにある秘境・椎葉村。伝承によれば、壇ノ浦で敗れた平家が落ち延び隠れ住んだが、源頼朝の命で那須与一の弟・大八郎が追討にやって来る。が、狩猟や焼畑など、山の暮らしで精一杯で、戦闘意欲を捨てた落人達を見て、便宜を図り、ともに暮らしたという。大八郎は、落人達のために、平家繁栄のシンボル・厳島神社を勧請さえした。さらに、平家の女官である鶴富姫と結ばれ、一子設けたという。大八郎はやがて頼朝の召還命令により椎葉を去るが、鶴富姫は娘に婿を取り那須姓を継がせ、その子孫が代々椎葉の庄屋を継いだ。その那須家の江戸時代の邸が今も椎葉に残っており、「鶴富屋敷」と呼ばれている。しかし、この鶴富屋敷や、椎葉村北部の十根川集落は、斜面に石垣を築いて屋敷を構えており、まるで山城に見え、十分に戦闘意欲を感じさせる。十根川には、大八郎御手植えと伝わる樹齢八百年の杉が聳える十根川神社があるが、これは彼らが再起を図ることを誓った記念碑のようにも見える。神仏習合色を残した神楽や、呪術性の強い正月行事、猪のお供えなど、山深い地ゆえの独特の文化が見られ、柳田國男も「後狩詞記」を著し「日本民俗学発祥の地」と言われる椎葉。その源泉たる「落人のエネルギー」を探る。
