奈良県天理市の石上神宮は、大和朝廷に重んぜられた、極めて古い歴史を誇る神社である。主祭神は、天孫降臨前の国津神の平定や神武東征で使われた、神剣・布都御魂剣（ふつのみたまのつるぎ）に宿る神霊とされ、その祭祀は、神事と軍事を司る物部氏が行っていた。明治に禁足地を調査したところ、古代の七支刀が発見された事でも知られる。祭神の一柱には、スサノオノミコトが八岐大蛇を斬った剣も含まれているのだが、一方で、日本書紀には八岐大蛇を斬った剣は吉備にあると書かれ、古語拾遺には後に石上神宮へ遷されたとある。その吉備の、剣があったという場所に建つのが、岡山県赤磐市の石上布都魂神社である。この神社の社伝によれば、八岐大蛇を斬ったその剣こそが、布都御魂剣という。岡山県の山間部に鎮座するこの神社は、山の麓に建つが、かつては山頂に社殿が営まれ、今もそこには大きな磐座がある。そこは石上神宮と同じく、禁足地となっている。神社の宮司は、今も物部姓だ。この近くには、弓削という地名もある。弓削の名が付く地名は全国にいくらかあり、それは道鏡を輩出したことで有名な古代の氏族・弓削氏の住んだ場所であるが、弓削氏とはその名の通り武器製作を生業とした民で、物部氏の一派であった。神話に遡る石上の信仰と、磐座の祭祀。古の人々が重視した「石」の意味に迫る。

宮崎県西部、険しい山の谷あいにある秘境・椎葉村。伝承によれば、壇ノ浦で敗れた平家が落ち延び隠れ住んだが、源頼朝の命で那須与一の弟・大八郎が追討にやって来る。が、狩猟や焼畑など、山の暮らしで精一杯で、戦闘意欲を捨てた落人達を見て、便宜を図り、ともに暮らしたという。大八郎は、落人達のために、平家繁栄のシンボル・厳島神社を勧請さえした。さらに、平家の女官である鶴富姫と結ばれ、一子設けたという。大八郎はやがて頼朝の召還命令により椎葉を去るが、鶴富姫は娘に婿を取り那須姓を継がせ、その子孫が代々椎葉の庄屋を継いだ。その那須家の江戸時代の邸が今も椎葉に残っており、「鶴富屋敷」と呼ばれている。しかし、この鶴富屋敷や、椎葉村北部の十根川集落は、斜面に石垣を築いて屋敷を構えており、まるで山城に見え、十分に戦闘意欲を感じさせる。十根川には、大八郎御手植えと伝わる樹齢八百年の杉が聳える十根川神社があるが、これは彼らが再起を図ることを誓った記念碑のようにも見える。神仏習合色を残した神楽や、呪術性の強い正月行事、猪のお供えなど、山深い地ゆえの独特の文化が見られ、柳田國男も「後狩詞記」を著し「日本民俗学発祥の地」と言われる椎葉。その源泉たる「落人のエネルギー」を探る。
