  • The Repair Estimate She Couldn't Accept Without a Second Opinion
    2026/09/10

He asked me what it was going to cost before I had the lid off the unit, and when I said I didn't know yet, he asked again, slower, like I hadn't heard him.

Late July, the kind of week where the sun is already working at seven in the morning. Brick ranch north of Kingfisher, well kept, the grass edged along the driveway. He was in his early sixties, retired from a job where he had run numbers for a living, and he had the air conditioner's paperwork on the kitchen table in a folder before I walked in.

The system had quit the night before. Outdoor unit humming, no fan, house climbing through the low eighties. That is a fifteen-minute diagnosis most days, and the fix is usually one of three parts. I have done that call a thousand times.

But the trouble had started before I got there. Shelby had given him the arrival window that morning, three hours, and he had called back twice. Not angry. He wanted it narrowed. He wanted to know if it was going to be the front of the window or the back. He wanted to know what would make it late.

When I pulled in he met me at the truck and the first thing he said was, "Just tell me what this is going to run me."

I said what I always say, that I'd know a lot more in about twenty minutes. He said he understood that, and then asked me for a range. I gave him a wide one, because a wide one was honest. He wanted it narrower. I told him I couldn't narrow it until I opened the unit. He said, "Ballpark, then. You've done this a long time."

That is where a lot of technicians get short with people. I used to. Because from where I stand, he is asking me to guess, and a guess I say out loud becomes a promise I didn't mean to make. And from where he stands, I am refusing to answer a simple question.

Core line: "When he asks for a ballpark, I say, "I'd rather show you the actual number in twenty minutes than give you a number now that I have to walk back." Then I go to work."

  • He Was Certain He Was The Reasonable One About The Heat Pump
    2026/09/10

He told me the last company had been working him, and about nine seconds later he told me exactly what was wrong with his air conditioner and how he knew.

Late August, one of those weeks where it never gets below eighty at night and the equipment does not get a rest. Brick ranch east of town, single story, built somewhere in the middle seventies, big elms on the west side doing the house a real favor. Man in his fifties, met me in the driveway before I had the truck door shut. Three ton split system, about twelve years on it. Running all day, house sitting around eighty two.

Here is the whole story he gave me, in order, standing in the drive.

Last spring another outfit came out. Their guy told him the indoor coil was leaking and needed to be replaced, and quoted a number he thought was ridiculous. He said no. He called somebody else who put refrigerant in it, and it cooled fine the rest of the summer for a fraction of what the first company wanted.

Then he says, and this is close to word for word: I know how this works, that first guy was on commission and he saw an old system and a man with no way to check him. It just needs freon. That is not me being cheap, that is common sense.

Two claims, back to back, out of the same mouth. The other man's judgment was bought. His own judgment was plain sense.

Now I want to tell you what I did with that, because I did not pull into the driveway clean either.

I know the outfit he was talking about. Bigger shop, salespeople, the kind of place where a coil quote and a commission sit in the same paragraph. So while he was talking I had already half decided the coil call had been a stretch and that I was going to be the one who found the real trouble. I was building the same kind of case he was. I just had it pointed the other direction.

Core line: "And then they were asked how the most accurate and objective measurement available would rate them, compared to how they had just rated themselves a minute earlier."

  • The Woman Who Couldn't Believe the Repair Held
    2026/09/10

By the time I pulled out of the shop she had called three times, and nothing about her job had changed since the first one.

First full week of July, heat index sitting around 105 by early afternoon. Two story house in one of the newer additions, built maybe twenty years ago, the kind where the upstairs runs eight degrees warmer than the downstairs no matter what anybody does about it. She works from home and she is on the phone most of the day. Blower running fine, air coming out of the vents at room temperature.

She called at 7:40 in the morning. I put her on for that afternoon, a window from three to six, which in the first real heat of July is a good answer and she knew it.

Then she called at 9:15. Then at 11:30. Then at ten till two.

Nothing had changed in between. She had nothing new to tell me and I had nothing new to tell her. Every time she got the same true sentence back: you are on the schedule, Dave is coming this afternoon, the window stands.

For a lot of years I read calls like that one way, and the way I read them was wrong. I figured she either did not believe the answer or she was working the phone trying to get bumped ahead of somebody quieter. I have been short with people over it. Not rude, but clipped, the voice you use when you want a conversation to be over.

What she was doing was neither of those things.

There is a paper from 1987 by Cindy Hazan and Phillip Shaver called Romantic love conceptualized as an attachment process. What they actually did is not what you picture when somebody says study.

Core line: "It teaches her that calling is the thing that moved the truck, so next time it is five calls, and it takes the afternoon away from somebody who waited quiet since Monday."

  • The Repair He Feared Less Because He Could See It Coming
    2026/09/10

He picked the more expensive repair and looked relieved doing it.

Late August, a brick ranch on the edge of town, the kind built in the nineties with the condenser tucked up against the north wall where nobody ever hears it run. Retired couple, both home all day, which matters in August. The air had been blowing warm since Sunday and they waited until Wednesday to call because they were hoping it would come back on its own.

They agreed to the diagnostic on the phone without a pause. I said what it was, one flat number, and the man said fine, when can you be here. No haggling, no let me think about it, no call me back after I talk to my wife.

I got out there and found a refrigerant leak in the evaporator coil.

So I laid out the two ways to go. I could replace the coil, which is a known job with a known part and a number I could hand him standing right there. Or I could go find the leak and repair it, which on a coil that age is often a small fix at a joint, and would very likely cost him less. But I could not tell him how much less until I was into it. So I gave him a range.

Not after sleeping on it. Almost immediately. And when he said it, his shoulders came down about two inches.

I want to be clear about what happened in that hallway, because I have had this exact conversation more times than I can count and I misread it for years. He did not pick the coil because he thought the coil was the better repair. He picked it because the coil had a number attached and the other one had a hole where the number should be.

There is a paper about this from 1961 by a man named Daniel Ellsberg, called Risk, Ambiguity, and the Savage Axioms. Ellsberg is better known in this country for other things entirely. This is the piece of him that ended up in my work.

Core line: "If I get in there and it turns out to be the coil itself, it goes to this other number, and I will stop, come out to you, and tell you before I spend a dollar of it."

  • The Worry She Was Certain Showed While the Heat Pump Ran
    2026/09/09

She had been terrified about the money for two hours and I had no idea, because she thought it was written on her face.

Early spring, a rent house out toward the county line, tenant not owner, which changes the whole shape of a call. Young woman, maybe late twenties, a toddler asleep on the couch under a blanket with cartoon dinosaurs on it. The heat had quit and it had gotten down to forty seven in there overnight.

I did what I do. I looked at the furnace, found a failed inducer motor, and started explaining what an inducer does and why the pressure switch will not close without it.

And she stood there and nodded. And nodded. For a long time.

When I finally got to the number, she said, oh, and her whole body changed, and she said, I have been trying to figure out how to ask you what this was going to cost since you got here.

Two hours. She had been carrying that the entire time and I had read her as calm.

Here is the thing she said next, which is the actual episode.

She said, I figured you could tell.

There is a set of experiments on exactly this. Thomas Gilovich, Kenneth Savitsky and Victoria Medvec published a paper in 1998 called The Illusion of Transparency. In one version they had people drink a series of liquids, most of them fine, one of them genuinely foul, and try to keep a straight face. Then they asked the drinkers to guess how many observers would correctly pick out which drink was the bad one.

The drinkers wildly overestimated. They were certain their disgust was leaking out. It mostly was not. Observers did barely better than chance.

They ran it on other things too. People telling lies were sure they looked shifty. People who were nervous giving a talk were certain the room could see it. In every case the inner experience felt loud and the outward signal was faint.

Core line: "But I say, before I get into this, most of what goes wrong here lands between this and this, and if it turns out to be the expensive end I will tell you before I touch anything."

  • The Repair She Put Off Because Bad Luck Happens To Others
    2026/09/09

He agreed with every word I said about the failure, and then explained why it would not happen to him.

Composite call. This is four or five conversations stacked into one, because the pattern is the point and I am not putting a real customer in it.

Late October, and I am standing in a garage in front of a nineteen year old eighty percent furnace with a heat exchanger I did not like. Not cracked through, not yet. But scaled, and rusted at the bottom of the cells in the pattern you get when a system has been condensing where it should not.

I showed him. He looked. He is a smart man, retired from something technical, and he followed everything I said.

Then he said, well, but this one has been solid.

And there it is. He was not disagreeing with me about heat exchangers. He agreed heat exchangers fail. He agreed nineteen years is a lot. He just did not believe that applied to his.

That is a specific thing with a name.

In 1980 a psychologist at Rutgers named Neil Weinstein published a study called Unrealistic Optimism About Future Life Events. He gave a couple hundred college students a list of things that happen to people. Some good, some bad. Owning your own home. Getting divorced. Having a drinking problem. Living past eighty. Getting a serious illness.

For each one he asked a simple question: compared to other people like you, how likely is this to happen to you?

The answers did not average out. They could not, mathematically. Almost everybody rated themselves above average for the good outcomes and below average for the bad ones. Everybody, at once, expected to be luckier than everybody.

Core line: "If you escalate, you are asking him to accept that he is not the careful person he believes he is, and he will defend that before he defends the furnace."

  • The Man Who Had to Believe He Broke the Heat Pump
    2026/09/09

He had set the thermostat to sixty on a hundred and four degree day, and he genuinely believed that would make it cool faster.

Mid July, a two story on the east side of Kingfisher, the kind with the big west windows nobody thinks about when they buy the house. He met me at the door with a glass of tea and an apology, which is how you can tell somebody has been fighting with something for a while.

He said, I have had it on sixty since noon and it is still seventy nine in here.

I asked him what time he set it to sixty.

Noon, he said. And then he said, and I bumped it down twice more since.

Now, a thermostat is a switch. It is not a throttle. Setting it to sixty does not make the system work harder than setting it to seventy four. It just tells the system to keep running until it gets to sixty, which on a hundred and four degree afternoon in a house with west glass it is never going to do. All he had done was guarantee the equipment ran without stopping for six straight hours.

But that is the mechanical half, and it is the less interesting half.

The interesting half is that pushing the button felt like doing something.

There is a paper from 1975 by a Harvard psychologist named Ellen Langer, called The Illusion of Control. She ran a set of studies on lotteries, which is about as pure a game of chance as you can build. In one of them she sold lottery tickets to office workers. Some people got handed a ticket. Others got to pick their own ticket out of a box.

Same odds. Identical. A ticket is a ticket.

Then she came back and offered to buy the tickets back. The people who had been handed a ticket would sell it for about a dollar ninety. The people who had chosen their own wanted almost nine dollars.

Core line: "When I am chasing an intermittent fault, something that only misbehaves once a day and never while I am standing there, I catch myself checking things I have already checked."

  • Duct Repair: She Wanted The Same One Back
    2026/09/09

She asked me if I could put the same one back in. The exact same one. And she was not being difficult, she was being loyal.

Late June, a brick ranch south of the tracks, the kind with the deep front porch and a swing that has been painted four different colors. Widow, early eighties. Her husband had put the air conditioner in himself, or had it put in, she was not sure which anymore, and it had run since 1998.

Twenty seven years. That is a good run. That is a better run than the equipment deserved.

It was done. Compressor was locked, and the refrigerant in it has not been made since 2020. There was no version of this where it went back together.

I told her, plainly, and she nodded like she already knew. Then she asked whether I could find the same model.

Now, the thing I would have done at twenty five years old is explain why that was impossible. R-22 phaseout, efficiency standards, the whole lecture. And it would have been correct, and it would have been the wrong conversation entirely.

Because she was not asking a technical question.

There is a paper from 1988 by William Samuelson and Richard Zeckhauser called Status Quo Bias in Decision Making. They ran a series of experiments where people were given a choice among options, and the only thing that changed between groups was which option got labeled as the one you already have. The current option won, consistently, far beyond what the actual merits justified. And the more options you added, the stronger the pull toward the existing one got.

Their explanation is the part that stays with me. Some of it is loss aversion, sure. But a lot of it is that switching requires a decision, and a decision means you can be blamed for the outcome. Staying does not feel like a choice, so it does not feel like something you could get wrong.

That is what was happening on that porch, and it had almost nothing to do with air conditioning.

Core line: "And then she asked me the question that was actually underneath the whole thing, which was whether the back bedroom would finally cool."
