She said the number back to me like I had been the one to get it wrong.
This was late October, the first real cold snap, the one that makes every furnace in Kingfisher County decide whether it is going to show up for work this year. Brick ranch on the edge of town, built in the seventies, furnace in a hall closet with the return grille right outside the bedroom door. The kind of house where the closet still has the pencil marks from the kids' heights.
A retired couple. I am going to leave them as a couple and not give them a name, because across 47 years I have stood in this same kitchen more times than I can count, and what I am about to tell you is all of those visits stacked into one.
The furnace was the second one that house had seen. They told me that before I had the panel off, the way people do when they are proud of something. The original went almost thirty years. This one had been in since the late nineties. The inducer motor had quit, and when I went further the control board had taken a hit as well. Two parts, one visit, on a furnace old enough that I owed them a conversation about the whole unit and not just the parts.
So I gave them the number for the repair, and then I gave them the number to replace the furnace, side by side, because at that age they deserve to see both. She repeated the repair number back to me. Not angry. Puzzled. Like I had said it in the wrong currency.
Her husband said the thing I have heard in a hundred kitchens. "The whole furnace didn't cost that when we put it in." And then the second thing, which always follows the first. "The old one went thirty years. Why is this one done at twenty-five?"
Core line: "A furnace in that house cost what a furnace cost, and it lasted what furnaces lasted when they were built heavy and simple and ran off a thermostat with a drop of mercury in it."
