概要

She had the number written in pencil on the back of an envelope, and it was not the number on my ticket.

This was the last week of October, the first morning it stayed below freezing past sunrise. A brick ranch on a section road north of town, built in the seventies, the kind with a furnace closet off the hallway and a return grille you can hear from the kitchen. The woman who lived there had taught school for thirty years and kept every bill in a shoebox with a running total penciled on the lid. Her furnace had quit lighting the night before. Thermostat clicked, inducer hummed, no flame, no blower, house down to fifty-eight by the time she called.

The office quoted her the way my office quotes everybody: the dispatch fee first, then the diagnostic, two separate numbers, both real. One pays for a truck and a man to come down her road. The other pays for the hour it takes to find out what is actually wrong. She said fine, come on, and she did what careful people do. She wrote it down.

I found a cracked hot surface igniter inside of ten minutes. Easy one. I showed her the hairline through the ceramic, told her what the part and the labor would run, she said yes, I put it in, the burners lit, and the house started climbing. Good afternoon by any measure.

Then I wrote the ticket at her kitchen table. Dispatch, diagnostic, repair, total. She looked at it a long time. Then she turned the envelope around so I could read what she had written during the phone call, and it was the first number. Just the first one. She was not angry. She was embarrassed, and that was worse, because she had not done anything wrong.

She heard both numbers. I know she did, because she could repeat the conversation back to me almost word for word. But the second number had gone soft on her somewhere between the phone and the pencil. The first one stuck. The total never got built at all.

Core line: "They ran another version as an auction for a jar of coins, where some bidders paid their bid and others paid their bid plus a percentage premium added at the end."
