She stood in her kitchen doorway with her arms crossed and told me the man I sent had fixed her furnace, and she was not sure she would call me again.
This was the first hard freeze of the year, early November, the kind of morning where the dog's water bowl has a skin of ice on it. A brick ranch on the east edge of Kingfisher, built in the seventies, with a ninety-percent furnace in a hall closet that some outfit put in twenty-some years ago. A retired couple. He had farmed, she had taught school, and the two of them had been running space heaters for a week.
The furnace had quit the week before. Another outfit came out first. The fellow they sent was, by every account, a delight. He sat at the kitchen table, talked about the Thunder, asked about the grandkids on the refrigerator, and replaced the igniter. The furnace ran two days and died again. He had charged them for the part and the trip, and they did not blame him for one bit of it. "He was so nice," she told me. "He just got unlucky."
Then they called my shop, and I sent a tech I had working for me years back. I will call him the quiet one, because he was. Good hands, the best diagnostic mind I had at the time, and about twenty words a visit. He pulled the blower door, watched it light, watched it run four minutes and lock out, and knew. The condensate trap was packed solid and the pressure switch was dropping out. That furnace could light all day long. It just could not breathe. The igniter was never the problem.
He cleared the trap, blew out the tubing, cycled the furnace four times, wrote the ticket, said "it's running," and left. Forty minutes, start to finish.
She called my office that afternoon. The furnace was fine. That was not what she called about. "The other fellow was so nice," she said. "Yours was kind of cold. He didn't tell us anything. Is that how your people are?"
Core line: "His competence she had no way to check, because nobody in that house could read a pressure switch, so when the furnace died she did not move him to the cold corner."
