He had both quotes on the kitchen table, one under each hand, like he was weighing them.
Late July, the kind of week where the pavement on Main Street gets soft and nobody in Kingfisher says "hot" out loud any more because what would be the point. A brick ranch from the seventies on a gravel road north of town, good bones, original ductwork, a condenser out back older than the pickup in the driveway. The compressor locked up on a Tuesday afternoon. By the time I got there the house was in the high eighties and the dog had given up and gone under the porch.
The man who owned the place was near my age. Hauled cattle for a living, which means he knows exactly what a diesel bill is and exactly what a breakdown costs when you're loaded and two hundred miles from home. Not a man you have to explain money to.
Nineteen years old, R-22, compressor seized. You can put a compressor in a nineteen-year-old R-22 unit. I wouldn't do it to my own house, and I told him so. He nodded like he'd known since the thing started making that sound in June.
So I wrote him two options. The standard efficiency unit and the step up, a 14 SEER and a 17 SEER if you want the numbers on the box. The step up cost more. On paper, with his own electric bills from the last two summers spread out next to my clipboard, the difference in the bill paid back the difference in the price in a handful of summers, and then kept paying. He has lived in that house twenty-six years. He is not moving.
I showed him the math. He followed it. He's not a man who gets lost in arithmetic.
He picked the cheaper one.
Not after a fight. He just looked at the two numbers, tapped the smaller one, and said, "That's the one I can do."
Core line: "You tell a man who has kept a trucking operation alive through three recessions that he doesn't understand long-term thinking, and you have just lost every word you say after that."
