概要

The man read the repair number, set the sheet down on the kitchen table, and said, well, what else are we going to do.

It was the second week of August, the kind of stretch where the afternoons sit at a hundred and the wind out of the south feels like a dryer vent. The house was a brick ranch on a section line west of town, built in the nineties, good shade trees, well kept. A couple in their sixties, both retired from jobs that paid steady, the kind of people who had never once put off a bill. The system was fifteen years old, put in by the people they bought the house from, and the compressor had locked up sometime in the night. By the time I got there the house was at eighty-six and climbing.

I did the diagnostic the way I always do it. Confirmed the compressor was gone, checked the rest of it, ran the numbers. On a unit that age the compressor was out of warranty, so it was the part, the refrigerant, and most of a day of labor. The repair came in a little over six thousand dollars.

I wrote it on the sheet and slid it across the table. He read it twice. She looked at him. Then he said it: well, what else are we going to do.

And I knew exactly what had just happened, because I have watched it happen for forty-seven years. In his head there were two things on that table. Fix it, or sit in an eighty-six degree house. Six thousand dollars, or nothing. Measured against nothing, six thousand dollars to have cool air back by tomorrow looks like a bargain.

What was not on the table was the third thing. A new system for that house was not twice that number. It was not close to twice that number. He was about to spend most of the price of a new system to put a new heart into a fifteen-year-old body, and he was going to do it without ever comparing the two, because nobody had put the two next to each other.

Core line: "If I had walked in and only written down the new system number, he would have weighed that against nothing too, and he might have bought more than he needed."
