本作の“主役”は、作家が生まれた頃から慣れ親しみ、今も所有している一つの火鉢。日露戦争で中国大陸に出兵した祖父が入手したらしい有田焼の火鉢は、姿形を変えぬまま、およそ百年を生き抜いてきた。火鉢には、江戸時代の旅人たちが描かれていた。現在の山口県防府市で地主の惣領として生まれながら祖父は学問を志して東京へ出て、大学を卒業すると、徒歩で郷里に帰ったという。祖父は、火鉢に描かれた旅人に興趣を覚えたのではないか？　不動の火鉢に、作家は有為転変の来歴を与え、「旅する火鉢」に想いを馳せる。

明治・大正期の文学者、森鴎外の代表的な短編小説作品。本作が森鴎外の処女小説である。初出は「国民之友」［1890年（明治23年）］。初期の代表作であり、1884年から5年間のドイツ留学時の体験を下敷きにして書かれた。主人公、太田豊太郎はエリート官吏である。彼はドイツ留学中に舞姫エリスと出会い、二人で暮らし始める。しかし、そのことによって周囲から中傷され官職を辞することになる。やがて、豊太郎は、前途を案じる友人からの勧めに応じて、エリスとの別れを決意。事情を知り発狂した身重のエリスを残し、豊太郎は日本へと帰国する。近代文学の代表的なロマンチシズム溢れる作品である。

「深紅よりもっと鮮やかな朱赤」と描写される“ポンペイアンレッド”の椅子をモチーフにした幻想譚。
小雨の降る四月、還暦の誕生日を一週間後に控えた語り手の女性のところに、家具店からお探しの商品が漸く見つかったと、電話が入る。360度回転し、リクライニングを倒すと180度水平になる本革製の椅子。最も難しい条件が色の指定で、どうしてもポンペイアンレッドでなければならなかった。強く輝き、その強烈さゆえ座る人間を体内から崩壊させるような赤い椅子に、「私」はこの先の人生を託す意気込みなのだ。生憎、現物はなかったものの、革素材と写真を確かめ、即決で購入を決めた。
椅子が届いて数日後、すっかり満足した「私」のところに、一通のダイレクトメールが届く……。時空を超えて官能の世界へと誘う怪しげな赤がとりわけ印象に残る佳編。
