A strange and extremely familiar time that takes place in American history right before the Civil Rights Movement forces white America to examine itself. A time in which every TV and movie showed happy, Aryan, small-town America with all the slavery and war just offscreen. Everyone allowed to fold themselves into whiteness (Italians, Mexicans, Irish, Slavs, etc.) starts getting nose jobs and starving themselves to look like a moral and upstanding white jagoff (and also because their bosses wouldn't hire them if they looked too "ethnic"). How could these ideas become so dissociated from the real world? Easy! The government shelled out fistfuls of World War 2 cash to build the suburbs. The middle class American brain is officially created by some think-tank in D.C. and its beneficiaries become some of the most ideologically malformed weirdos to ever buy a house. This week, listener, we get into some good old fashioned American propaganda. In this case, that all real Americans are actually immigrants, so we should love every immigrant [Europeans only]. Is this progress? Eh, sort of. Does it fall so short of actual cultural pluralism that to look back at it seems quaint and kind of evil? Sure does! Was it quaint and kind of evil at the time? You betcha! These new immigrants from the post-World-War-1 era of European austerity and collapse, called "dung," were at the forefront of the New Deal era coalition and, as World War 2 drew close, actively reporting on the atrocities they were fleeing across Europe. Americans didn't like how much their society resembled Nazi society, so they invented an idea of plurality, without changing the underlying social relations that keeps hate alive. This is it listener, we get the part where some academics went, "hey, this race science crap is nothing. It's, like, based on prejudice. What the heck???" And yet they still did not give up on race being real. See, in America, race science doesn't die because the whole system is set against the people who could tell you the truth of it. Like Black people, for example. And yet, America came a little bit 'round on the concept of race, starting to dismiss it once the Nazis slaughtered lighter-skinned people en masse. But hey, we were starting to get there. And history being the nasty business it is, we can say that this chapter inaugurates a new era of horrifying pseudo-race pseudo-science.
