"I remember never wanting anything to do with distance running. Back then I thought 5 miles was too long. Long distance. I had a pretty successful couple of years of high school running, but after high school I hung up my spikes in pursuit of more interesting activities like life, career, raising a family, personal development, etc. Etc. And let's fast forward to many decades later. For the sake of brevity, I decided to get back into running just for fitness and fun."

"Really looking forward to it. It's going to be one of those highlights of my running journey. I've been running for about six years, and this will be my fifth marathon. I also have eleven half marathons to my credit during that time frame, as well as a bunch of shorter races, five K, ten K, et cetera. And yes, lots and lots of training. I average about twelve to 1000 miles a year. Thank you for listening."

"Some ray that running is a metaphor for life itself. And I agree. In the six years that I've been running consistently, I've learned some things, and I'll share a few here and keep it brief. Number one consistency. Be consistent in whatever you do, whether it's running or anything else. Small, consistent efforts lead to big change over time. I'm living proof of that. Number two discipline. This one is huge for me. You can set goals."

"This past Sunday, I participated in the USATF. That's the United States Track and Field Association's masters national twelve K championship. This was my first USATF sanctioned masters is race. And for those of you that aren't familiar with the rankings, master's means athletes over 40 years of age, and it's broken down into age group increments like 40 to 45, 45 to 50, 50 to 55, and so on, all the way up to age 85 and beyond."

"So this will be marathon number six for me among many shorter races over the years, 15 half marathons and numerous ten k's and five k's, and I've been running for only about seven years. That's why I call myself the Rookie Runner, although I had a short stint in high school where I was a sprinter. But over the years, I stopped running and didn't pick it back up until seven years ago."

  • @RunCoachRay | What is a Recovery Run?

"I went on a three mile recovery run today. What is a recovery run, you may ask? Let's talk about it. A recovery run is a low intensity training run, usually performed within 24 hours after a harder training effort, such as a tempo run or a speed workout around the track. And since I did a ten mile run yesterday as part of my marathon training, today's run was helpful in my recovery. The recovery run is performed at a low intensity effort."
