    2025/12/22

💧 Small Talk|Drinking Water: Health & Safety Tips

    We often hear people say:

“Drink more water. It’s always good for you.”

    Jyutping:

    ngo5 dei6 sing4 jat6 teng1 dou3 jan4 gong2:

    “do1 di1 jam2 seoi2, deoi3 san1 tai2 jat1 ding6 hou2.”

But is drinking more water always better?

    Not necessarily.

    Jyutping:

    daan6 hai6, jam2 dak1 jyut6 do1 zau6 jat1 ding6 jyut6 hou2 me1?

    kei4 sat6 mei6 bit6.

    Drinking enough water is important,

but drinking too much can be unsafe.

    Jyutping:

    jam2 zuk1 gau3 ge3 seoi2 hou2 zung6 jiu3,

    daan6 jam2 gwo3 loeng6 faan2 ji4 wui5 m4 on1 cyun4.

Our body needs balance, not extremes.

    Jyutping:

    san1 tai2 zeoi3 seoi1 jiu3 ge3 hai6 ping4 hang4,

    m4 hai6 gik6 dyun1.

Drinking too much water in a short time

can dilute electrolytes and cause discomfort.

    Jyutping:

    dyun2 si4 gaan3 noi6 jam2 taai3 do1 seoi2,

    jau5 gei1 wui5 cung1 taam6 san1 tai2 jap6 min6 ge3 din6 gaai2 zat1,

    ling6 jan4 m4 syu1 fuk1.

    A safer tip is:

Drink when you are thirsty, and spread it out through the day.

    Jyutping:

    bei2 gaau3 on1 cyun4 ge3 zou6 faat3 hai6:

    hau2 hot3 sin1 jam2 seoi2,

    tung4 maai4 fan1 hoi1 jat1 jat6 maan6 maan6 jam2.

    Check your body signals:

Your urine color, energy level, and how you feel.

    Jyutping:

    lau4 ji3 zi6 gei2 san1 tai2 ge3 seon3 hou6:

    jyu4 lei6 siu2 bin6 ngaan4 sik1,

    zing1 san4 zong6 taai3,

    tung4 maai4 zing2 tai2 gam2 gok3.

    Water supports health,

but it is not a miracle cure.

    Jyutping:

    seoi2 deoi3 gin6 hong1 jau5 bong1 zo6,

    daan6 m4 hai6 san4 kei4 joek6 seoi2.

Real health comes from daily balance:

sleep, food, movement, and peace of mind.

    Jyutping:

    zan1 zing3 ge3 gin6 hong1,

    loi4 zi6 mui5 jat6 ge3 ping4 hang4:

    fan3 gaau3, jam2 sik6,

    wun6 dung6, tung4 maai4 sam1 ling4 ping4 on1.

Take care of your body — gently and wisely. 🤍

    Jyutping:

    wan1 jau4 gam2 ziu3 gu3 zi6 gei2 ge3 san1 tai2,

    jik6 dou1 jiu3 jau5 zi3 wai6.

  • Ep.299: Honest Cantonese Talk: Staying Aware in a Crowd: Everyday Survival Instincts We Forget
    2025/12/21

    Small Talk|小分享

From a Tragic Crowd Attack to Everyday Instincts|

I play with kids almost every day.

They love playing tag, chasing games, and hide and seek.

Honestly, at my age, I don’t really like running around anymore.

But I still play with them.

Yesterday, I heard the news about a tragic crowd attack.

    It was a random attack.

Some people were killed, and many were injured.

What shocked me the most was this—

Some people didn’t even react when the attacker was already right beside them.

    That really hit me.

It made me think of playground games.

Tag. Hide and seek. Running. Dodging. Hiding. Creating distance.

As kids, we learned these instincts through play.

Back then, they were just games.

But now, adults also need to remember these instincts to protect ourselves.

Not to live in fear, but to stay aware.

I recently heard some survival tips and want to share them with you.

    Simple survival tips:

    Stay alert.

If you can run, run. If you can’t run, hide.

If you must face danger, keep distance and protect yourself.

Some everyday items can help too.

A water bottle with a strap.

A dog leash with metal parts.

    A gym stretching rubber band.

They’re not weapons. They’re just tools.

Tools to create space, protect yourself, and escape if needed.

We never know when we might need them to protect our lives.

    Stay aware. Stay safe.

    2025/12/21

From Changing My Hair Part to New Year’s Goals | One Step a Day

    ---

    gam1 jat6 hai6 sap6 ji6 jyut6 ji6 sap6 jat1 hou6,

    As today is December 21,

    ngo5 dei6 dou1 hoi1 ci2 jyu6 bei6 zi6 gei2, jing4 zip3 san1 jat1 nin4.

we are also preparing ourselves to enter a new year.

    ---

    gam1 ziu1, ngo5 soeng2 si3 haa5 goi2 jat1 goi2 ngo5 tau4 faat3 ge3 fong1 hoeng3,

This morning, I wanted to adjust my hair’s direction,

    jau4 jau6 bin1, maan6 maan6 goi2 heoi3 zo2 bin1.

from the right side, slowly moving it toward the left.

    ---

    daan6 jan1 wai6 ngo5 di1 tau4 faat3 ji5 ging1 jung6 zo2 jau6 bin1 gaai3 sei3 sap6 gei2 nin4,

But because my hair has already been parted to the right side for over forty years,

    jat1 zik6 dou1 hai6 tung4 jat1 go3 fong1 hoeng3 sang1 zoeng2,

in the same direction for over forty years,

    jiu3 zik1 hak1 bik1 di1 tau4 faat3 goi2 heoi3 zo2 bin1 gaai3 hai6 mou5 mat1 ho2 nang4.

It’s almost impossible to force my hair to switch to the left part immediately.

    ---

    ngo5 fat1 jin6 jat1 joeng6 hou2 zung6 jiu3 ge3 si6.

    I realized something important.

    ---

    jyun4 loi4, m4 ho2 ji5 jat1 haa5 zi2 goi2 dak1 taai3 gap1.

It’s not wise to change the direction too drastically.

    ---

    nei5 jat1 bik1, keoi5 zau6 wui5 faan2 kong3.

When you force it, it resists.

    ---

    nei5 jat1 gap1, faan2 ji4 zung6 m4 hou2 tai2.

When you rush it, it looks worse.

    ---

    so2 ji5 ngo5 gaan2 zo2 maan6 maan6 lei4,

So I chose to take it slowly,

    jat1 jat6 goi2 jat1 siu2 siu2.

changing just a little each day.

    ---

    zau6 hai6 ni1 jat1 hak1, ngo5 nam2 dou3,

And at that moment, I realized

    kei4 sat6 san1 jat1 nin4 ge3 muk6 biu1, dou1 ho2 ji5 hai6 gam2.

that New Year’s goals can be the same.

    ---

    ngo5 dei6 m4 seoi1 jiu3 jau4 ling4 jat1 haa5 zi2 heoi3 dou3 jat1 baak3.

We don’t need to go from 0 to 100 overnight.

    ---

    zi2 jiu3 mui5 jat6 haang4 jat1 bou6,

All we need is one step each day,

    gin1 ci4 zou6 tung4 jat1 gin6 zung6 jiu3 ge3 si6.

faithfully doing that one important thing.

    ---

    dou3 nin4 mei5 ge3 si4 hau6,

And by the end of the year,

    nei5 jat1 ding6 wui5 tai2 dou3 m4 tung4.

you will surely see the difference.

    2025/12/20

    ji6 ling4 ji4 ng5 nin4 zik1 zoeng1 jyun4 git3.

As 2025 comes to an end.

    ni1 jat1 nin4, jau5 taai3 do1 bei1 soeng1 tung4 sat1 heoi3.

This year has held so much grief and loss.

    sang1 wut6, deoi3 hou2 do1 jan4 lei4 gong2, zan1 hai6 hou2 naan4.

Life has been hard for many people.

Between Christmas and the Winter Solstice,

    ngo5 dei6 jat1 cai4 ting4 jat1 ting4.

    we pause together.

    man6 jat1 go3 hou2 zan1 ge3 man6 tai4:

    to ask an honest question:

    sing3 daan3 m4 hai6 jau5 jing6 hak1 am3,

  • Ep.296: Why Are Things in Shein So Cheap?
    2025/12/11

    gam1 jat6 ngo5 mou4 ji3 zung1 tai2 zo2 jat1 go3 jing2 pin2, gong2 dim2 gaai2 Shein di1 saam1 ho2 ji5 gam3 peng4.

    hai2 san1 ge3 jat1 nin4, ngo5 kau4 san4 bong1 zo6 ngo5, zi2 maai5 zan1 zing3 seoi1 jiu3 ge3 je5.

  • Ep.295: Should We Still Celebrate After a Tragedy?
    2025/12/10

⭐ Small Talk: Should We Still Celebrate After a Tragedy?

    English → Cantonese → Jyutping

    ---

After a disaster, should we continue with celebrations?

    hai2 zoi1 naan6 zi1 hau6, jing1 m4 jing1 goi1 gai3 zuk6 hing3 zuk1 ge3 wut6 dung6?

This has become a point of debate for some people.

    ni1 jat1 go3 sing4 wai4 jat1 di1 jan4 ge3 zang1 ji5.

For me, if someone prefers a quieter and calmer way, that is totally fine.

    ngo5 zi6 gei2 gok3 dak1, jyu4 gwo2 nei5 soeng2 syun2 zaak6 bei2 gaau3 on1 zing6 ge3 fong1 sik1, m4 syun2 zaak6 jit6 naau6 ge3 fong1 sik1, gam2 dou1 hai6 hou2 ge3.

But if some people feel that after a tragedy, it’s even more important to cherish the chance to celebrate together, then let them celebrate.

    daan6 hai6 jyu4 gwo2 jau5 di1 jan4 gok3 dak1, hai2 zoi1 hau6 gang3 gaa1 jiu3 zan1 sik1 ho2 ji5 jat1 cai4 hing3 zuk1 ge3 gei1 wui6, zau6 jat1 cai4 hing3 zuk1 laa1.

Honestly, we never know whether we will still have this chance next year.

    zan1 hai6 ge3, ngo5 dei6 wing5 jyun5 dou1 m4 zi1 dou6, ming4 nin4 gam1 jat6 zung6 jau5 mou5 gam2 ge3 gei1 wui6.

The truth is, life is always a mix of sorrow and joy.

    si6 sat6 soeng6, jan4 sang1 zau6 hai6 bei1 hei2 gaau1 zaap6.

In sorrow, there can still be moments of joy.

    hai6 oi1 soeng1 ge3 tung4 si4, jik6 dou1 jau5 faai3 lok6 ge3 si6.

And even in joy, there may still be pain at the same time.

    faai3 lok6 ge3 si4 hau6, jik6 dou1 tung4 si4 jau5 bei1 soeng1.

Recognizing that life always contains both joy and sorrow — that is a kind of maturity.

    nang4 gau3 tung4 si4 sing4 jing6 bei1 hei2 gaau1 zaap6 ge3 jan4 sang1, ngo5 lam2 dou1 hai6 jat1 zung2 sing4 suk6.

That’s why the Bible teaches us not to judge others.

    so2 ji5 sing3 ging1 dou1 jau5 waa6, m4 hou2 leon6 dyun6 bit6 jan4.

We never know what story lies behind another person’s choices.

    nei5 m4 zi1 dou6 bit6 jan4 bui3 hau6 ge3 gu3 si6.

If someone chooses differently from you, don’t use your own measuring stick to judge them.

    jyu4 gwo2 bit6 jan4 ge3 zou6 faat3 tung4 nei5 m4 tung4, m4 hou2 jung6 nei5 zi6 gei2 baa2 cek3 heoi3 hang4 loeng4 bit6 jan4.

Especially during this sensitive time, we need more understanding and less criticism.

    dak6 bit6 hai6 ni1 jat1 go3 si4 gaan3, do1 di1 tai2 loeng6, siu2 di1 deoi3 jan4 ge3 pai1 pun3.

I hope everyone will have a peaceful Christmas.

Small Talk: Growing Older, Growing Free

(Upper Beginner Level — English → Cantonese →

Recently I read an article on Facebook.

    ngo5 zeoi3 gan6 hai2 Facebook tai2 zo2 jat1 pin1 man4 zoeng1.

The writer is 44 years old and has very few friends now.

    man4 zoeng1 go2 wai2 zok3 ze2 sei3 sap6 sei3 seoi3, ji4 gaa1 caa1 m4 do1 mou5 mat1 pang4 jau5.

But she said she feels happier than before.

    daan6 hai6 keoi5 waa6 keoi5 bei2 ji5 cin4 gang1 gaa1 hoi1 sam1.

When she was younger, she cared a lot about fitting in.

    keoi5 hau6 saang1 ge3 si4 hau6, hou2 zoi6 ji3 zi6 gei2 hap6 m4 hap6 kwan4.

She didn’t want people to think she was strange or unfriendly.

    keoi5 m4 soeng2 jan4 dei6 gok3 dak1 keoi5 m4 hap6 kwan4 waak6 ze2 m4 hou2 soeng1 cyu5.

So she joined dinners and outings even when she was tired.

    so2 ji5 zau6 syun3 hou2 gui6, dou1 wui5 bik1 zi6 gei2 heoi3 zeoi6 caan1 tung4 wut6 dung6.

Later she found out that the real pressure came from forced socializing.

    hau6 loi4 sin1 faat3 jin6, zan1 zing3 ling6 keoi5 san1 fu2 ge3 hai6 di1 ngaang6 sing3 se5 gaau1.

Even with many people around, she still felt lonely.

    zau6 syun3 san1 bin1 hou2 do1 jan4, keoi5 dou1 gok3 dak1 hou2 gu1 daan1.

Now her life is simple and quiet.

    ji4 gaa1 keoi5 ge3 sang1 wut6 gaan2 daan1 jau6 on1 zing6.

She doesn’t force herself to join social groups anymore.

    keoi5 m4 wui5 zoi3 bik1 zi6 gei2 caam1 gaa1 di1 se5 gaau1 wut6 dung6.

She keeps only the relationships that feel real and comfortable.

    keoi5 zing6 hai6 bou2 lau4 ling6 keoi5 syu1 fuk6 tung4 zan1 sam1 ge3 gwaan1 hai6.

She spends more time on things that make her grow.

    keoi5 zoeng1 si4 gaan3 fong3 hai2 ling6 zi6 gei2 zeon3 bou6 ge3 je5 soeng6 min6.

    Like exercising, reading, and writing.

    lai6 jyu4 zou6 wan6 dung6, tai2 syu1 tung4 se2 je5.

These things help her understand herself more deeply.

    ni1 di1 wut6 dung6 ling6 keoi5 gang1 gaa1 liu5 gaai2 zi6 gei2.

Some people ask her if she feels lonely.

    jau5 di1 jan4 man6 keoi5 wui5 m4 wui5 gok3 dak1 gu1 daan1.

But she says real loneliness is being with many people yet feeling empty inside.

    daan6 hai6 keoi5 waa6 zan1 zing3 ge3 gu1 duk6 hai6 hai2 jan4 kwan4 jap6 min6 dou1 gok3 dak1 hung1 heoi1.

Now she values liking herself more than having many friends.

    ji4 gaa1 keoi5 gok3 dak1 zung1 ji3 zi6 gei2, bei2 jung2 jau5 hou2 do1 pang4 jau5 gang3 zung6 jiu3.

Her circle is smaller, but her heart is lighter.

    pang4 jau5 kyun4 sai3 zo2, daan6 hai6 sam1 bin3 dak1 gang3 hing1 sung1.

She said: maybe we’re not losing friends — we’re just learning to be our own best friend.

    keoi5 waa6: ho2 nang4 ngo5 dei6 m4 hai6 mou5 pang4 jau5, ji4 hai6 zung1 jyu1 hok6 sik1 zou6 zi6 gei2 zeoi3 hou2 ge3 pang4 jau5.

If you feel the same way, maybe we are the same kind of people.

    jyu4 gwo2 nei5 dou1 jau5 tung4 joeng6 ge3 gam2 gok3, gam2 ngo5 dei6 dou1 syun3 hai6 tung4 leoi6 laa1.
