"Herodias" is a short story by Gustave Flaubert, one of the great masters of French literature. It is a reworking of the tale of Salomé and John the Baptist, in which faith and cruelty are blended in a deadly dance culminating in tragedy. Pour l'atteindre, il recherche l'expression absolue, d'où sa réputation de besogneux : "Ce souci de la beauté extérieure que vous me reprochez est pour moi une méthode. Quand je découvre une mauvaise assonance ou une répétition dans une de mes phrases, je suis sûr que je patauge dans le faux. À force de chercher, je trouve l'expression juste, qui était la seule et qui est, en même temps, l'harmonieuse".

Flaubert reprend ici la légende de Julien l'Hospitalier en un conte flamboyant où le sang et la violence le disputent au mystique de la rédemption...

Cette nouvelle publiée en 1877 dans un recueil de trois contes entamés en 1844, peut être considérée comme une œuvre testamentaire à un double point de vue : dernière œuvre de fiction achevée par Flaubert, la question de la Foi est y omniprésente et transcende la simple humanité de ses personnages.

"Un cœur simple", "La Légende de saint Julien l'Hospitalier" et "Hérodias", composent les Trois contes de Gustave Flaubert, soit sa dernière production romanesque achevée et une de ses plus brillantes. "Un cœur simple" raconte la vie de Félicité, fille de campagne, devenue servante de la petite bourgeoisie locale. Dévote et mystique, elle finit par s'attacher de manière démesurée à un perroquet. "La Légende de saint Julien l'Hospitalier" retrace la vie d'un jeune homme, Julien, qui se voit prédire par un cerf qu'il tuera ses parents.

"Un Coeur simple" est une nouvelle de Gustave Flaubert, parue dans le recueil "Trois Contes" en 1877. L'auteur y dépeint la vie d'une domestique de campagne dans la Normandie du dix-neuvième siècle. Gustave Flaubert s'inspire en fait de la vie de la servante de ses parents, qui l'éleva, et fut ensuite sa domestique pendant plus de 50 ans.
