Oscar Wilde est un écrivain irlandais. Il se construit un personnage d'esthète et de dandy. À l'issue de ses études, Wilde s'installe à Londres, où il parvient à s'insérer dans la bonne société et les cercles cultivés, s'illustrant dans plusieurs genres littéraires. Au tournant des années 1890, il précise sa théorie esthétique dans une série de dialogues et d'essais, et explore dans son roman "Le portrait de Dorian Gray" (1890) les liens entretenus par la beauté, la décadence et la duplicité.

"The Ballad of Reading Gaol" was written by Oscar Wilde in France, where he was in exile after his release from Reading Gaol. Wilde had been imprisoned and sentenced to two years hard labor. A hanging took place while Wilde was incarcerated, and the poem is the narrative of the execution.

His writings entwine themes of beauty, decadence and duplicity, which made him a more than colorful agent provocateur in the Victorian society. This would eventually lead to a very public trial after he was accused of sodomy. His defense, punctuated with witticism, often left the court roaring with laughter, but the evidence was against him, and he was eventually sent to prison.

Many consider "The Canterville Ghost" the most famous ghost story of all time. It is a parody featuring a dramatic spirit named Sir Simon and an American ambassador named Mr. Hiram B. Otis. Mr. Otis travels to England with his family and moves into a haunted castle. Lord Canterville, the previous owner of the castle, warns Mr. Otis that the ghost of Sir Simon de Canterville has haunted the castle ever since he killed his wife, Eleonore, centuries ago.

It is all to easy to be familiar with Oscar Wilde the aesthete, the limpid sophisticate ever ready with a witty epigram designed to both shock and stimulate.
