One of the most oft-used themes for an author to explore is that of themselves and how they see authors in stories coping with everything around them.

A train seems a very reliable mode to bring out the best in authors and sometimes the worst in their fictional characters. In this volume our narratives are usually set inside the carriage compartment where they are really up close and personal with each other. All our authors need to do is to light the touchpaper and stand well back.

Some people have basic needs of foods and materials that only theft can provide an answer for, and some others just pursue the taking of what they want, whenever they want and from whoever they want. These are their stories.

In the English language ‘bittersweet’ is that most pivotal of words. The mixture of sadness and happiness that suggest both but often bringing us smartly to earth, smack dab in-between them both, with little of either.

Jens Baggesen's The Labyrinth (1792–93) is a genre-bending and highly personal travel book that follows the young Danish author's journey, made in 1789, from Copenhagen through Germany to the Swiss border at Basel. In its outer form, it follows the conventions of travel writing: describing the cities, landscapes, and notable people encountered on the route, while also offering critical commentary on art, architecture, theater, and literature, mixed with reactions to the unfolding French Revolution.

The inspiration for this brilliant anthology is the "I Learnt About Flying from That" articles that first appeared in the RAF flight safety magazine Air Clues in the 1940s and continue to feature in the magazine to this day. Flying Through the Ranks gets a five-star start with an extraordinary tale from a marshal of the Royal Air Force and continues in the same vein. Men and women of every rank—pilots, navigators, engineers, a RAF regiment officer, and airmen too—reveal similar intriguing experiences in both war and peace.

The crown weighs heavy on my head, and the Castle University’s ivy-clad walls have become a gilded cage. As the dust settles from betrayal and bloodshed, I stand amidst the wreckage, not just as a mafia heiress, but as the Queen in a game where hearts are for the taking and every move could be a deadly trap. The men I've let into my heart are the pillars of my reign. My strength. My weakness. In a world where loyalty is measured in blood, we stand united, because when the swords are drawn and alliances shatter, it's not just my love I'll fight for.

After defeating the mercenary army that threatened his home, Jakar sets out with Efadora—the only person left with the power to bind him—across the Rift. He hunts the cultists who enslaved him, intent on ending their trade in elemental children, but he remembers little beyond that his search begins in the legendary city of Sulian Daw. Back in Mira, the Foundry's rhidium—the rare mineral that grants them extraordinary power—has gone missing and is feared stolen by the rebellious faction that seeks to bring down the Sovereign.

Daniel Owen is coming to terms with not being a cop. He's happy to find a bunch of like-minded people at the town allotments—until one of them is brutally murdered. Mal Kent is settling into his new job as the man-in-charge of Melin Tywyll CID. The fly in the ointment is bigoted, lazy DI Carey, Daniel's replacement. Carey wants to blame Daniel's new friends for the murder, and with Daniel as their only alibi, accusations fly.

DCI Daniel Owen is barely holding things together when an old flame crashes into his life, with a dead body and enough emotional baggage to sink a ship. Then the fires start. Who is Jonathan Cole, and why is he living at a run down holiday park? Did he kill the park's owner? Daniel wants to believe Jonathan is innocent, and Jonathan wants to seduce Daniel. Mal, now Superintendent Kent, wants to come home. His undercover officer has disappeared from the same holiday park, and that can't be a coincidence, can it?

Wyvern shifter Zidra and ice elf Kyrundar are members of a sacred order of elite warriors—and, according to Zidra, bitter rivals. While she seeks to prove she’s the best without aid, Kyrundar believes their friendly competition makes them ideal partners. Then Kyrundar follows Zidra into a trap, and his distraction costs her everything.

It's not a good Monday for DI Daniel Owen. A body in a wheelie bin. Missing teenagers. His ex turning up as his new boss. A secretive teenager, a nosy secretary, an idealistic social worker, and a dodgy fruit and veg salesman all have pieces of the jigsaw. If Daniel and Maldwyn can trust each other again, they can put the pieces together. But time is running out, and at least one child's life is in danger. It's been raining for weeks, and the flood waters are rising, threatening to engulf them all.

This isn't how moving in together is supposed to go. Daniel is left dealing with dead bodies, while Mal disappears undercover. Daniel knows the bodies were murder victims, but he can't prove it. Mal is getting more and more secretive. His friend Hector is being abused but insists that the bruises happened when he ran into a door. Daniel is fighting unseen enemies without any of the information he needs.

Daniel and Mal need some peace to recover from the horrors of their last case. They don't get it because a dead family needs justice. An abandoned child threatens to break Daniel's heart. Mal's past comes calling in the shape of an attractive young man. Did John Edwards slaughter his wife and daughters, then kill himself? Why did the little boy survive the massacre? What are the hippies next door hiding? The only certainty is that everyone is lying.
