The Divine Comedy is a narrative poem by Dante Alighieri that describes the the pilgrim Dante’s travels through Hell (Inferno), Purgatory (Purgatorio), and Paradise (Paradiso). This trio of books, or cantiche, is one example of the number three as a theme throughout the work. Each book consists of 33 cantos, which—added to an introductory canto—totals 100. Each cantica follows a pattern of nine phases plus one for a total of ten: nine circles of hell plus Lucifer, nine rings of Mount Purgatory plus the garden of Eden, nine celestial bodies of Paradise followed by the Empyrean essence of God.

Written in the Middle English of the late 14th century, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight survives in a single manuscript which also contains three religious poems including "Pearl", written it seems by the same author, who is therefore referred to as The Pearl Poet. The poem tells the story of an incident at the court of King Arthur, involving Sir Gawain’s acceptance of a challenge from the mysterious Green Knight, and leading to a test of his chivalry and courage.

The Argonautica, also known as Jason and the Golden Fleece or Jason and the Argonauts, is the only surviving epic poem from Hellenistic Greece. "Polyeucte martyr" est une tragédie de Pierre Corneille représentée en 1641 au Théâtre du Marais. Elle est inspirée par le martyre de Polyeucte de Mélitène sous le règne de Valérien en 259. C'est l'une des dernières tragédies classiques du XVIIe siècle à sujet religieux.

L'action de cette tragédie historique se déroule à Mélitène, en Arménie romaine, au IIIe siècle après Jésus-Christ, lors de la persécution des chrétiens par l'empereur romain Decius. Corneille évoque les conséquences de la conversion au christianisme de Polyeucte.
