Pippa Passes is a captivating blend of drama and poetry by Robert Browning, first published in 1841 as the inaugural volume of his Bells and Pomegranates series. Browning envisioned this work as a groundbreaking exploration of a young, innocent girl navigating the perilous streets of Asolo, untouched by the corruption surrounding her. Its release was met with significant controversy due to its candid depiction of various unsavory characters, particularly the adulterous Ottima, and its frank discussions on sexuality. One of the most memorable passages beautifully encapsulates the essence of ...

Poetry can capture the imagination in a few short lines but narrative verse or poetry takes the form of telling a story, whether it be simple or complex in a longer form. Among the most ancient forms of poetry, it has widespread roots through almost every culture. In Volume 4 we bring you the classics 'The Eve of St Agnes' by John Keats; 'Flodden' by Sir Walter Scott; 'The Ballad of Agincourt' by Michael Drayton; 'Tam O'Shanter' by Robert Burns; and 'The Pied Piper of Hamelin' by Robert Browning.

The dramatic romance was a poetic form particularly favored by Robert Browning. This collection of 25 poems includes many of the poet's most celebrated efforts in this genre. Each of these poems is essentially a monologue or imagined conversation by a character recalling a life-changing event. The particular occurrence may be related to war (Incident of the French Camp), love (The Last Ride Together), murder (Porphyria's Lover), or even a humorous fable (The Pied Piper of Hamelin.)

This dramatic romance, first published in 1845, ostensibly relates the story of the escape of a love-lorn young woman from the rigours of life with a stern and uncaring husband. Several commentators have seen the poem as an oblique reference to Browning's own current life situation, in which he enabled his future wife, Elizabeth Barrett, to escape from the confines of a patriarchal household to Italy, a country that forms the backdrop to many of his poems.

A selection of Robert Browning's dramatic monologues. In "My Last Duchess," an entitled nobleman shows off a portrait of his late wife. In "Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister," a frustrated monk dwells on a petty rivalry. In "The Bishop Orders His Tomb at Saint Praxed's," a dying man instructs...

Caliban is a major character in The Tempest by Shakespeare. He is a deformed monster, the offspring of Sycrorax, a witch. Prospero, a magician who presides over the island where Caliban dwells, has made him a servant. This galls Caliban's spirit, as he believes himself to be the rightful ruler of the island. Setebos is the deity who was worshipped by Sycorax and is mentioned by Caliban in two scenes.

The legend of a garishly-dressed piper who uses his musical skills to rid a town of a plague of rats and then lures the town's children into a mysterious and inaccessible realm when denied payment for his services dates back to the Middle Ages. Browning's colorful retelling of the tale first appeared in 1842 in the collection Dramatic Lyrics. As with many of Browning's monologues, the poem's vivid wordplay and jangling rhymes make it an apt vehicle for recitation.

Andrea Del Sarto (1836 - 1530) was a Florentine painter whose career flourished during the High Renaissance. In this dramatic monologue, "the faultless painter" (Andrea Senza Errori, as he was surnamed by the Italians) is the speaker. He addresses his unsympathetic wife, Lucrezia, upon whom he dotes, and for whom he has broken faith with his royal patron, Francis I of France so that he can meet the expenses of her indulgent lifestyle. He laments that he has not realized the possibilities of his genius, partly blaming and partly excusing the woman who has failed to support his high ideals.

This poem, rich in its palette of human emotions, is couched in simple narrative language. Some critics have sought to interpret the poem as an allegory and find a specific meaning for every phrase and picture, but the richness of its symbolism is not favorable to this kind of treatment. In some ways, it resembles a piece of music. Each mind can draw from it a personal, and, to the individual, satisfactory interpretation.
