Sokrates, der alte Greis,

Sagte oft in tiefen Sorgen:

„Ach, wie viel ist doch verborgen,

Was man immer noch nicht weiß.“

Und so ist es. – Doch indessen

Darf man eines nicht vergessen:

Eines weiß man doch hienieden,

Nämlich, wenn man unzufrieden.

Hier sieht man Fritz, den muntren Knaben,

Nebst Huckebein, dem jungen Raben.

Und dieser Fritz, wie alle Knaben,

Will einen Raben gerne haben.

Schon rutscht er auf dem Ast daher,

Der Vogel, der misstraut ihm sehr.

Oh wie lieblich, oh wie schicklich,

Sozusagen herzerquicklich,

Ist es doch für eine Gegend,

Wenn zwei Leute, die vermögend,

Außerdem mit sich zufrieden,

Aber von Geschlecht verschieden,

Wenn nun diese, sag ich, ihre

Dazu nötigen Papiere

So wie auch die Haushaltsachen

Endlich mal in Ordnung machen

Und in Ehren und beizeiten

Hin zum Standesamte schreiten,

Wie es denen, welche lieben,

Vom Gesetze vorgeschrieben,

Dann ruft jeder freudiglich:

„Gott sei Dank, sie haben sich!“

Maximilian I. (1459-1519) ist „Held Theuerdank“.

Stephen Fry a görög mitológia kezdeteit elbeszélő "Mítosz" című könyve után a Héroszok történeteivel folytatja a mesélést. Az isteni származású hősök csodálatos kalandjai és halhatatlan hőstettei Fry könnyed, egyúttal lebilincselő stílusában hol humoros gellert kapnak, hol romantikusan szomorúak. Meghallgathatjuk Héraklész, Medusza és Orpheusz történetét is.

Jean-Baptiste Pocquelin, better known by his pen-name Molière, was France's greatest satirical dramatist. Such was his influence on the French language that it is often referred to as 'the language of Molière', and he has been dubbed 'the French Shakespeare'. Dating to the ninth century B.C., Homer's timeless poem still vividly conveys the horror and heroism of men and gods wrestling with towering emotions and battling amidst devastation and destruction, as it moves inexorably to the wrenching, tragic conclusion of the Trojan War. Renowned classicist Bernard Knox observes in his superb introduction that although the violence of the Iliad is grim and relentless, it coexists with both images of civilized life and a poignant yearning for peace.

Ion is a very short Platonic dialogue between Socrates and a rhapsode by the name of Ion who specializes in reciting the poetry of Homer. The dialogue explores the nature of poetic and artistic inspiration in a most playful way.

Though it is for the sparkling epic, Aeneid, that the Roman poet Virgil is best known, it was these two poems, The Eclogues and Georgics, which first established his reputation. Cast in the tradition of pastoral poetry, The Eclogues were written between 41 BCE and 37 BCE when Virgil (Publius...

Dante's Inferno by Dante Alighieri. The first part of Dante's Divine Comedy , the "Inferno" (or "Hell"), begins on the night before Good Friday in the year 1300, "halfway along our life's path". Dante is thirty-five years old, half of the biblical life expectancy of 70, lost in a dark wood, assailed by beasts he cannot evade, and unable to find the straight way to salvation. Conscious that he is ruining himself and that he is falling into a deep place where the sun is silent, Dante is at last rescued by Virgil, and the two of them begin their journey to the underworld.

Purgatory is the second part of Dante's Divine Comedy, following the Inferno, and preceding the Paradiso. The poem was written in the early 14th century. It is an allegory telling of the climb of Dante up the Mount of Purgatory, guided by the Roman poet Virgil, except for the last four cantos at which point Beatrice takes over as Dante's guide.

Durante degli Alighieri, usually referred to simply as Dante, was born in Italy, and lived from c. 1265 to c. 1321. He was a major poet during the Middle Ages. He wrote the famous Divine Comedy, which was originally called Comedìa (modern Italian: Commedia). The work was later christened Divina by Boccaccio. It is widely considered the greatest literary work composed in the Italian language and a masterpiece of world literature. In the late Middle Ages, the overwhelming majority of poetry was written in Latin, and therefore accessible only to affluent and educated audiences.

Lucy Maud Montgomery (November 30, 1874 - April 24, 1942), published as L. M. Montgomery, was a Canadian author best known for a series of novels beginning in 1908 with Anne of Green Gables. Matthew Insists on Puffed Sleeves: Matthew was having a bad ten minutes of it. He had come into the kitchen, in the twilight of a cold, grey December evening, and had sat down in the wood-box corner to take off his heavy boots, unconscious of the fact that Anne and a bevy of her schoolmates were having a practice of "The Fairy Queen" in the sitting-room.
