  • Implementation of long-acting injectable cabotegravir for PrEP in Brazil with Beatriz Grinsztejn
    2026/10/28

Daily oral PrEP is highly effective, but taking a pill consistently can be challenging. Could long-acting injectable cabotegravir help close gaps in HIV prevention? What would it take to make it available through Brazil’s public health system? In this episode, the authors discuss the ImPrEP CAB Brasil study, which evaluated same-day access to injectable PrEP across six Brazilian cities, explore what the study found about PrEP coverage, participant choice, and delivering CAB-LA in routine care, as well as the questions that remain for equitable access and scale-up.

  • Joanne Langley and Innocent Valea on Ebola vaccine in people living with HIV
    2026/09/30

Ebola outbreaks occur in areas where many people are living with HIV; however, there is very little evidence on how people with HIV respond to Ebola vaccines. In this edition of the podcast, we talk to authors of a study assessing the safety and immunogenicity of an Ebola vaccine in people with well controlled HIV.

  • Janet Turan and Zachary Kwena on home-based couples testing and counselling for HIV
    2026/08/26

HIV remains underdiagnosed among men in many settings, contributing to ongoing transmission. When women seek care during pregnancy, there is an opportunity to reach out to their partners. Home-based couples testing and counselling can help to identify HIV and discuss other health issues. In this podcast, we look at a trial comparing lay counsellor delivered couples-based HIV testing with distributions of self-test kits, and standard of care in Kenya.

  • Amy Justice and Keri Althoff on the Lancet HIV Commission on ageing and HIV
    2026/07/27

Living longer with HIV is one of medicine's greatest success stories, but longevity brings new challenges. By 2040, more than half of all people living with HIV are expected to be over the age of 50, and their health pathways during ageing are very heterogeneous. What does that mean for patients, clinicians, and health systems worldwide? Are our health systems ready for this shift in the HIV ageing demographics? In this episode, Amy Justice and Keri Althoff discuss The Lancet HIV Commission on Ageing and HIV: A global perspective, exploring why the future of HIV care must shift beyond viral suppression toward healthy ageing, integrated care, and what matters most to people living with HIV.

  • Annemarie Wensing, Tommaso Clemente, and Arjen Stam on clinical management of persistent low-level viremia in people on antiretroviral therapy
    2026/07/01

Some people on HIV treatment have a viral load that won't fully suppress. In this episode, we speak with Annemarie Wensing (University Medical Center Utrecht in The Netherlands and Witwatersrand University in South Africa), Aryen Stam (University Medical Center Utrecht) and Tomasso Clemente (IRCCS San Raffaele Scientific Institute in Milan, Itally); authors of an international consensus published in The Lancet HIV, bringing together nearly 100 experts across six continents to tackle one of the least standardized challenges in HIV care: low-level viremia. What does the evidence actually say about risk? When should a clinician act? How to communicate a low-level viremia diagnosis to a patient? And what does this guidance mean for the people being treated in settings where resistance testing and second-line options are out of reach?

  • David Coelho and Arjee Restar on mental health disparities among transgender women and transfeminine people living with HIV
    2026/06/15

Transgender women and transfeminine people living with HIV face layers of stigma and multiple challengers that contribute to high levels of mental ill health and substance use—new research quantifies this burden, and we discuss the findings with the authors and explore drivers and solutions.

  • Esteban Martinez and Steven Grinspoon on non-communicable diseases and the REPRIEVE trial
    2026/04/29

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) increasingly represent a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among people with HIV. People with HIV are at high risk of developing NCDs, often at younger ages and more severely than people without HIV.

Esteban Martinez from the Hospital Clinic and University of Barcelona, and Steven Grinspoon from the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, join us to explore the importance of NCDs and how data from the REPRIEVE trial can help us understand and prevent the underlying causes increasing the risk of NCDs in people with HIV.
