  • Possibilities and Integrity with Dick Brown
    2026/09/07

Dick Brown, a 2019 South Dakota Hall of Fame Inductee, has spent a lifetime carrying forward a family legacy of service that traces back to a Norwegian homestead built in South Dakota in 1873. From Washington, D.C. to the State Legislature to a lifelong commitment to South Dakota's parks and open spaces, his story is one of mentorship, partnership, and quiet obligation to community.

In this interview, 2020 Inductee Jack Marsh sits down with Dick to talk about the mentor who shaped his life's direction, the love story that began with a blind date, and what it means to be one of only three couples ever inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame together.

    Watch to learn:

    • How Dick's great-grandfather helped settle the Split Rock Creek homestead that inspired Ole Rolvaag's "Giants in the Earth"
    • The story of Dr. William O. "Doc" Farber, the USD mentor who shaped Dick's career and introduced him to his wife, Sue
    • How Dick and Sue's decades of public service helped build some of South Dakota's most treasured public spaces

Harvey Jewett, a 2005 South Dakota Hall of Fame Inductee, built a remarkable life across three distinct careers in law, business, and education, guided throughout by a clear and consistent set of principles: respect, accountability, and a deep sense of personal responsibility.

In this episode of South Dakota Storytellers, Angela Kennecke sits down with Harvey to trace the journey from a self-reliant boyhood in Aberdeen to the halls of a Jesuit prep school, from a $215 legal bill that launched a national motel brand to two decades of transforming higher education in South Dakota.

    Watch to learn:

    • How an independent upbringing and education shaped Harvey's lifelong philosophy
    • The story behind Super 8 Motels and the principles that helped grow it into a national brand
    • What Harvey and his fellow regents did to revitalize South Dakota's university system
    • Why Harvey sees the South Dakota Hall of Fame not as personal recognition, but as part of the mosaic that defines the state
