Today, on Day 306 of Saints in a Year, we honor Saint Ingrid of Skänninge, the first Dominican nun in Sweden and foundress of the first Dominican cloister for women there.

Under the spiritual direction of the Dominican priest Peter of Dacia, Ingrid embraced Dominican spirituality and eventually founded St. Martin's in Skänninge in 1281. She died only about a year later, but devotion surrounding her holiness continued.

Her unusual recognition history is fascinating. A canonization process began in 1405, Swedish bishops promoted her cause at the Council of Constance, an investigation followed in 1416–1417, and the cause was revived in 1497. In 1507, her relics were solemnly translated and a Mass and Divine Office were composed in her honor. However, a final formal papal canonization apparently never occurred.

During the Protestant Reformation in Sweden, her convent and relics were destroyed.

Yet more than seven centuries later, Catholics still remember Saint Ingrid and the life she gave to God.

We are called to be faithful with our chapter and trust God with the rest of the story.

Ingrid never saw how everything would turn out. Neither will we. There will be prayers whose answers we never see, seeds whose harvest belongs to another generation, and work that continues after we're gone. Our job is not to control the ending. Our job is to remain faithful.

Prayer

Saint Ingrid of Skänninge, pray for us when life changes in ways we never expected. Give us courage to follow Christ wherever He leads, teach us to plant faithfully even when someone else will see the harvest, and help us trust God with the rest of our story.

Today, on Day 305 of Saints in a Year, we honor Saint Giles, the mysterious hermit and abbot whose devotion became enormously popular throughout medieval Christianity.

Historically, many details of Giles' life remain uncertain. But according to a beloved medieval tradition, he withdrew into the forests of southern France, where a deer regularly provided him with milk. When royal hunters pursued the animal, it fled toward Giles for protection. An arrow intended for the deer struck the hermit instead.

Giles later became associated with a monastery and eventually became one of the famous Fourteen Holy Helpers, invoked especially by the sick, poor, frightened, and those living with disabilities.

His story reminds us that holiness does not require recognition. Some of the most important things we will ever do for God may happen where nobody else can see them.

Thought to Remember

Holiness does not require being noticed. It requires being faithful.

Saint Giles spent much of his life seeking God in hiddenness. We may never know exactly how every detail of his medieval story unfolded, but his legacy reminds us that the quiet life offered completely to God is never insignificant.

Prayer

Saint Giles, teach us to seek God even when nobody is watching. Pray for those living with disabilities, illness, loneliness, or fear. Help us accept the wounds and limitations we cannot change without allowing them to define our worth.

Today, on Day 304 of Saints in a Year, we honor Saint Joseph of Arimathea and Saint Nicodemus, two secret disciples whose courage emerged at one of the darkest moments in the Gospel.

Nicodemus first approached Jesus at night and later cautiously defended Him before other religious leaders. Joseph of Arimathea was a respected council member and secret disciple who had been afraid to reveal his faith.

Then Jesus was crucified.

When following Him seemed to offer absolutely nothing in return, Joseph went directly to Pontius Pilate and asked for Christ's body. Nicodemus arrived with an extraordinary quantity of myrrh and aloes.

Together, they prepared Jesus for burial and placed Him in Joseph's new tomb.

They thought they were performing one final act of love.

They had no idea that the tomb they were closing...

would soon be empty.

"Joseph of Arimathea... took courage and went to Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus."

Mark 15:43

Joseph had been afraid before. Scripture doesn't hide that. But eventually, he took courage. Courage doesn't mean fear disappears. It means faith becomes greater than fear.

Prayer

Saint Joseph of Arimathea and Saint Nicodemus, pray for us when fear makes us hide our faith. Give us courage to stand with Jesus when following Him becomes difficult, unpopular, or costly. And when life feels like Good Friday, help us remember that Easter morning is coming.

Today, on Day 303 of Saints in a Year, we celebrate Saint Jeanne Jugan, foundress of the Little Sisters of the Poor.

Her mission began in 1839 when Jeanne encountered a poor, blind elderly woman named Anne Chauvin. Jeanne brought her home and gave the woman her own bed. Soon she was caring for more abandoned elderly people and begging door to door to provide for them.

What began as one act of charity eventually became the Little Sisters of the Poor.

But Jeanne was removed from leadership, pushed into obscurity, and her role as foundress was minimized while someone else received much of the credit. She spent decades quietly living among the sisters she had helped bring together, without demanding that the world recognize what she had done.

After her death, the truth was restored.

Her story reminds us that our faithfulness does not depend upon applause and that God never overlooks the sacrifices the world fails to notice.

Saint Jeanne Jugan

Jeanne didn't simply speak about humility. She lived it. She became so little in the eyes of the world that even her role as founder was nearly forgotten. But becoming small before God does not make our lives insignificant. Sometimes, that's exactly where God does His greatest work.

Prayer

Saint Jeanne Jugan, teach us to see Christ in the elderly, the forgotten, and the poor. Give us generous hearts that serve without demanding recognition. Help us remain faithful when our work goes unnoticed and teach us to trust that nothing done with love is ever forgotten by God.

Today, on Day 302 of Saints in a Year, we commemorate the Passion of Saint John the Baptist.

John confronted Herod Antipas over his unlawful relationship with Herodias and was imprisoned for refusing to remain silent. Then, during Herod's birthday banquet, a reckless oath and a horrifying request led to John's execution.

Herod had the palace, the authority, and the power to imprison John. Yet when the decisive moment came, Herod became trapped by pride and fear of what his guests would think.

John was the prisoner.

But John was the one who was truly free.

His martyrdom challenges us to remain faithful to Christ even when truth becomes unpopular or costly.

"He must increase, but I must decrease."

John's entire life can be understood through this sentence. His mission wasn't to become famous or build his own following. It was to point people toward Jesus. That is our mission too.

Saint John the Baptist, give us courage to remain faithful when the truth becomes difficult. Help us speak with conviction without hatred, stand for what is right without pride, and never value the approval of others more than the approval of God.

Yesterday, we met Saint Monica, the mother who refused to stop praying for her son.

Today, on Day 301 of Saints in a Year, we meet that son.

Saint Augustine of Hippo went from rejecting Christianity and pursuing worldly ambition and pleasure to becoming a bishop, saint, Doctor of the Church, and one of the most influential Christian thinkers in history.

His journey took him through Manichaeism, philosophical searching, struggles with sin, the preaching of Saint Ambrose, his mother's relentless prayers, and finally the famous moment in a garden when he heard the words "Take and read."

Augustine's story reminds us that our past does not have to determine our future and that no restless heart is beyond the reach of God's grace.

"You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you."

Saint Augustine, Confessions

We spend enormous amounts of our lives trying to quiet that restlessness with success, possessions, relationships, entertainment, and pleasure. Augustine tried too. Eventually, he discovered that the deepest hunger of the human heart has only one answer: God.

Prayer

Saint Augustine, pray for every restless heart searching for truth. Help us stop postponing the conversion God is asking from us today. Give hope to those ashamed of their past, courage to those struggling with sin, and wisdom to those searching for answers.

Today we celebrate Saint Monica, the mother whose years of prayer, tears, patience, and unwavering hope accompanied her son Augustine on one of the most famous conversions in Christian history.

Augustine abandoned Christianity, embraced another religion, pursued worldly ambition, and even sailed away after deceiving his mother. Monica continued praying. Eventually, Augustine encountered Saint Ambrose, returned to Christ, and was baptized into the Catholic Church.

He would become Saint Augustine, Bishop and Doctor of the Church.

Saint Monica's story reminds everyone praying for someone who has left the faith that we cannot always see what God's grace is doing beneath the surface.

Monica could not control Augustine's choices. But she could place him continually before God. When someone we love walks away from the faith, our hope is not in our ability to change them. Our hope is in the mercy of Jesus Christ.

Prayer

Saint Monica, teach us to persevere when our prayers seem unanswered. Help us to love without controlling, hope without despairing, and trust God when we cannot see what He is doing. Intercede especially for our families and everyone we love who has wandered from Christ.

Today we honor Our Lady of Częstochowa, the famous Black Madonna enshrined at Jasna Góra in Poland. The mysterious icon carries visible scars from a medieval attack and later became inseparable from the dramatic defense of Jasna Góra during the Swedish invasion of 1655.

For generations, Polish Catholics have turned toward Our Lady of Częstochowa through war, occupation, persecution, and suffering. Saint John Paul II also carried a profound devotion to the Black Madonna throughout his life.

Her wounded image reminds us that God does not have to erase every scar in order to bring healing. Mary continues to do what she always does: point us toward Jesus Christ.

These are Mary's final recorded words in Scripture. They perfectly capture the message of Our Lady of Częstochowa. Mary never keeps us for herself. She points toward her Son and tells us: Trust Him. Listen to Him. Follow Him.

Our Lady of Częstochowa, bring our wounds, fears, and families before your Son. Help us remain faithful when life becomes uncertain, trust Jesus when we cannot understand God's plan, and allow our lives to point others toward Christ.
