Today, on Day 349 of Saints in a Year, we celebrate Saint Teresa of Ávila, Carmelite reformer, mystic, and Doctor of the Church.
Born in Spain in 1515, Teresa entered the Carmelite Order but struggled for years with illness, distractions, and difficulties in prayer.
After a profound spiritual conversion, she developed a deeper life of contemplation and reported extraordinary mystical experiences.
Among the most famous was the Transverberation, in which Teresa described an angel piercing her heart with a fiery spear, an experience that later inspired Bernini's sculpture The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa.
Teresa went on to reform the Carmelite Order, establish seventeen convents, and work alongside Saint John of the Cross.
Her writings, including The Interior Castle and The Way of Perfection, remain among the greatest works of Catholic spirituality.
In 1970, Pope Saint Paul VI declared her the first woman Doctor of the Church.
Her story reminds us that prayer is not reserved for the spiritually perfect.
Prayer is a friendship with Jesus that grows through perseverance, humility, and love.
Scripture
"Remain in me, as I remain in you."
John 15:4
Thought to Remember
"Let nothing disturb you, let nothing frighten you. All things are passing away: God never changes."
"God alone suffices."
Prayer
Saint Teresa of Ávila, teach us to become people of prayer. When our minds wander, help us return to Jesus. When we feel discouraged, remind us that holiness is a journey, and help us remember that everything passes away, but God never changes.
Saint Teresa of Ávila, pray for us. Amen.
