  • S11 E12 Miss Poppins with Nicky Rishi
    2023/12/07

Parenting can feel lonely. Even if we have a large family or friend group, it can be hard to ask for advice -- there's a lot of judgment in parenting circles, even from the people who love us most.

The Miss Poppins App helps solve that. Nicky Rishi has assembled a team of world-class parenting experts, and a community of engaged parents, to help each other when we need it most.

Today she tells us all about it: why Miss Poppins exists, how it happened, what it does, and how you can get involved.

  • S11 E11 Family Dogs for Safety and Defense
    2023/11/30

  • S11E9 Martial Arts and Family Safety
    2023/10/12

The thing about martial arts training for kids and adults is that the most important lessons have nothing to do with kicking and punching. It's a way of building character traits and teaching habits of health and safety that very few other experiences can match.

Dickson Kunz has been training and teaching in martial arts for decades, and shares his perspective about martial arts and protecting our family: what works, what's imaginary, and how we can best help our kids learn these important skills.

  • S11E6 Top 10 Things First Responders Wish Parents Knew
    2023/07/21

If you look at the over 100 interviews with safety experts on this channel, you’ll see a lot of first responders and related professionals. Firefighters, paramedics, police, ER staff, security personnel…all of those people who are, as the name implies, the first to show up when things go wrong.

These are varied fields with people coming to them from widely varied backgrounds, but they all have at least one thing in common:

They hate it when children get hurt.

When I interview a member of the three disciplines, I ask them each the same question: what do you wish parents knew, so you could see their children professionally less often?

Although each gives different answers, their lists often intersected. Here are the top ten most common things first responders wish parents knew.

  • S11 E 5 Make Your Home a Harder Target (Part 2)
    2023/07/13

In this video, we look at the top 5 ways to avoid potential burglars and home invaders thinking you have a lot worth stealing in your home. In a previous video (link in the comments below), we covered 5 ways to make your home look harder to get away with breaking into.

I don’t talk much about property crimes in these videos. Property crime is different from violent crime. It’s not part of my mission here, and it is part of the mission for several great channels hosted by people who know more than I do about those things.

However, home invasions can be among the most dealy and traumatic crimes imaginable, and even a simple burglar can become dangerous if cornered.

Like any other hazard, the best way to stay safe is to avoid the situation entirely. So we’ll focus on the second method: the top 5 ways to make your home look like an unattractive target.
