    2026/10/02

On September 11, 2001, al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes, striking the World Trade Center and the Pentagon while a fourth plane crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers resisted the hijackers. Nearly 3,000 people were killed, and the attacks shattered Americans’ sense of security. The aftermath transformed both domestic and foreign policy. The United States launched the war in Afghanistan, expanded surveillance and counterterrorism powers, created the Department of Homeland Security, and introduced stricter airport security. The attacks also contributed to a climate of fear that brought discrimination against Muslim, Arab, Sikh, and South Asian communities. September 11 became a dividing line in modern American history. It reshaped national identity, altered the balance between security and civil liberties, and changed how the United States understood threats, military power, and its place in the world.

The deeper story was not simply about people entering the United States. It was about a country repeatedly redefining who could belong—and how new Americans, in turn, helped redefine America itself.

  • The Internet Arrives
    2026/09/19

The Internet transformed American life in the 1990s by connecting homes, schools, businesses, and individuals to a rapidly expanding global network. Technologies that had begun in research institutions became accessible through personal computers, dial-up modems, web browsers, email, and services like America Online.

As companies such as Amazon, eBay, Yahoo, and later Google emerged, the Internet began reshaping commerce, communication, journalism, and culture. It also created new challenges involving privacy, misinformation, regulation, and trust.

What began as a slow connection through a telephone line soon became a doorway to the world. The Internet brought global information and communities into American living rooms while simultaneously spreading American technology and digital culture around the world.
