Beginning with changes to U.S. immigration law in 1965, America experienced a major demographic transformation as increasing numbers of immigrants arrived from Asia and Latin America. Families, refugees, students, professionals, and workers reshaped cities, workplaces, schools, and communities across the country.
Immigration brought new languages, cultures, businesses, and skills, while also creating debates over border control, assimilation, labor, and national identity. By the end of the twentieth century, Asian American and Latino communities had become essential parts of modern American society.
The deeper story was not simply about people entering the United States. It was about a country repeatedly redefining who could belong—and how new Americans, in turn, helped redefine America itself.
