  • I Decided at 16 That I Didn't Want to Become Bob
    2026/10/10

I Decided at 16 That I Didn't Want to Become Bob

What if the biggest thing standing between you and the life you want isn't the world around you, but the story you tell yourself?

When I was 16, I worked as a gardener for the city council and met an older colleague everyone called “Grumpy Bob”.

Bob had plenty of things he wanted to do. He wanted to go skiing, see the pyramids, and take a round-the-world cruise.

But every time he talked about an experience he wanted, he found a reason why he couldn't do it.

He might break his leg skiing. He might get ill in Egypt. The boat might sink.

And I realised something that would stay with me for the rest of my life.

It wasn't the pilot stopping Bob from flying, border control stopping him from visiting Egypt, or the captain stopping him from boarding the boat.

    It was Bob stopping Bob.

At 16, I decided I didn't want to become Bob.

In this personal story, I explain how that decision influenced my life, from becoming a police officer and detective to retraining as a therapist, counsellor, hypnotherapist, and life coach, writing books, and building Right Your Own Story.

I also explore how self-limiting beliefs, fear of failure, negative self-talk, and the stories we inherit can prevent us from pursuing the things we want.

We don't always realise we're limiting ourselves. Sometimes, we simply accept the beliefs we've been handed and pass them on to the next generation.

But what if we could challenge those beliefs and write a different story?

    In this episode, we'll explore:

    • How self-limiting beliefs hold us back.

    • Why fear of failure can prevent personal growth.

    • How our experiences shape what we believe is possible.

    • How to question the stories we tell ourselves.

    • Why we may have more potential than we realise.

    Ask yourself:

What have I talked myself out of doing?

Is the story I'm telling myself actually true?

What might I do if I trusted myself a little more?

If Bob's story resonates with you, you might be interested in my six-week Confidence Code programme.

It includes a guided book and journal, 12 professional hypnotherapy audio sessions, and six live weekly group sessions with me via Zoom.

  • What If You've Been Underestimating Yourself?
    2026/09/14

What if you've been underestimating yourself?

Sometimes a lack of confidence isn't really about what we're capable of — it's about the beliefs we've developed about ourselves.

In this episode, James Taylor shares a true story from his early days in the police that changed his career and reveals a powerful way to think about self-belief, confidence and the doors we open — and close — in our lives.

When I was a young probationer, I had no intention of becoming a detective.

Then, during a CID attachment, a frustrating prisoner interview and one simple lesson from an experienced detective changed the way I looked at the situation — and ultimately changed the direction of my career.

    The lesson involved a corridor.

    A corridor with doors.

And that simple image has stayed with me ever since.

Because perhaps we all carry a corridor like that inside ourselves.

Behind some doors are possibilities, opportunities and versions of ourselves we haven't yet discovered.

But behind others are old beliefs:

    “You can't.”

    “You're not good enough.”

    “It's too late.”

“That's not for people like you.”

Sometimes the doors we need to open are the ones we've been afraid to approach.

And sometimes the doors we need to close are the ones carrying old beliefs that no longer serve us.

    The question is:

How do you know what's behind a door you've never opened?

    In this episode, I explore:

    • Why we can underestimate our own abilities
    • How past experiences can influence self-belief
    • The difference between feeling incapable and actually being incapable
    • Why confidence doesn't always have to come before action
    • How experience can create evidence that changes what we believe about ourselves
    • The importance of questioning the beliefs we've carried for years
    • Why some doors need to be opened — while others need to be closed
    • What the words “You Can't” might represent in our own lives
    • How curiosity can sometimes be more useful than trying to force ourselves to feel confident
    • Why you don't need to see the whole path before taking the next step

You don't have to open every door.

But perhaps there's one you've already decided is locked.

    Maybe it's time to investigate.

💬 Would you like to talk about what's holding you back?

If you're struggling with low confidence, self-doubt, low self-esteem, anxiety, feeling stuck or uncertainty about your direction in life, you don't have to work everything out on your own.

I offer a free 30-minute consultation where we can talk about what's happening for you, what you'd like to change, and whether working together could help.

  • The Dangerous Words We Say To Ourselves
    2026/05/19

The Dangerous Words We Say To Ourselves.

Do you ever catch yourself saying things like:

    “I ALWAYS get things wrong.”
    “I NEVER succeed.”
    “Nobody likes me.”
“Everything always goes badly for me.”

In this episode of Right Your Own Story, we explore the hidden psychological damage caused by negative self-talk and absolute thinking patterns such as “always,” “never,” “everyone,” and “nobody.”

These types of thoughts can quietly shape:

    • confidence,
    • anxiety,
    • self-esteem,
    • relationships,
    • emotional wellbeing,
    • and even the way we view ourselves and the world around us.

I explain why the brain falls into these patterns, how repeated negative thoughts can become emotionally convincing over time, and how harsh inner dialogue can slowly affect mental health, mindset, motivation, and personal growth.

    This episode also explores:

    • how negative thinking patterns develop,
    • why people become trapped in self-critical thinking,
    • how childhood experiences and criticism can shape internal dialogue,
    • and practical ways to challenge destructive thoughts and create healthier emotional balance.

    If you struggle with:

    • anxiety,
    • overthinking,
    • low self-esteem,
    • confidence issues,
    • people pleasing,
    • self-doubt,
    • emotional burnout,
    • or harsh inner criticism…

this episode may really resonate with you.

You’ll also learn practical mindset techniques to help challenge “always” and “never” thinking, improve emotional awareness, and develop a kinder and more balanced relationship with yourself.

If this episode helps you, please consider sharing it with somebody else who may need to hear it too.

  • I Moved to Cumbria and Everything Changed | A Therapist’s Life Reset in the Lake District
    2026/04/25

I Moved to Cumbria, and Everything Changed | A Therapist’s Life Reset in the Lake District

After a long break since November 2025, I’m finally back behind the mic — and a lot has changed.

In August, I made a big life move from Kent to Cumbria, settling in the heart of the Lake District — a place I’ve dreamed of living in since I was a child.

In this episode, I share what that transition has really been like. Not just the practical side of moving somewhere new where you don’t know anyone… but the deeper lessons it’s taught me as a therapist, a coach, and as a person navigating change.

From walking new paths using the HiiKER walking app, to unexpectedly powerful moments like cleaning years of dirt from my driveway with a pressure washer — this episode is full of simple, real-life metaphors for growth, clarity, and starting again.

It’s also a reminder that some dreams take time.
    In my case, 44 years.

As a boy, I promised myself I’d one day live in the Lake District — and now, at 54, that promise has become reality. This episode explores the idea of gestation periods, patience, and trusting that not everything has to happen quickly to be meaningful.

If you’re going through change, feeling stuck, or waiting for the “right time” to move forward, this conversation will resonate with you.

Because sometimes, growth isn’t about having the full map —
it’s about taking the next step and allowing the path to reveal itself.

🌱 In this episode, we explore:

    • Moving to Cumbria and adapting to a completely new environment
    • Life in the Lake District — slower pace, nature, and perspective
    • How a therapist navigates uncertainty and change
    • The power of small steps (and why you don’t need the whole plan)
    • Letting go of what’s built up over time (the “pressure washer” metaphor)
    • Why some goals take years — and why that’s okay

🎯 Ready to Take Your Next Step?

If this episode resonates with you, and you’re thinking about making a change in your own life, whether that’s gaining clarity, building confidence, or moving forward from something that’s been holding you back.

👉 I offer a free 30-minute consultation where we can explore exactly where you are and what your next step could look like.

You’ll find the booking link HERE.

    No pressure. Just a conversation.

    🌄 Closing Thought

Sometimes the biggest changes in life don’t come from having everything figured out…
They come from taking one step in a new direction — and trusting the rest will follow.

  • Change Your Frequency And Watch Your Life Transform
    2025/11/29

Change Your Frequency And Watch Your Life Transform

Host: James Taylor – Counsellor, Hypnotherapist, Life Coach, and Creator of Right Your Own Story

What if you could change your life as easily as turning a dial?

In today’s episode, Change Your Frequency And Watch Your Life Transform, we explore the powerful idea that your inner emotional state acts like a personal broadcast frequency—one that influences how you think, feel, behave, and ultimately, how your life unfolds.

So many people feel stuck on a “default setting”: overwhelmed, exhausted, anxious, or simply running old emotional programming.

But your mind is not a fixed station. You can consciously tune into a different signal—one aligned with clarity, confidence, happiness, and purpose.

This episode breaks down the metaphors, the psychology, and the grounded science behind changing your inner frequency so you can transform your outer world.

    In this episode, you’ll discover:

    • What your “default frequency” really is—and how it quietly shapes your day
    • Why negative emotional loops feel so magnetic, and how they become self-perpetuating
    • The truth about the Law of Attraction, Law of Vibration, and the science behind mindset change
    • How your Reticular Activating System (RAS) filters your reality and proves your beliefs back to you
    • Why positive psychology and neuroplasticity—not pseudoscience—are the real tools for transformation
    • The dangers of toxic positivity, magical thinking, and self-blame
    • Three powerful, practical steps to consciously shift your emotional state
    • How gratitude can act like a universal tuning fork
    • How future-self scripting rewires your identity and creates internal alignment
    • Why awareness is the true starting point for personal change

Whether you’ve heard of The Secret, the Law of Attraction, manifestation, or the Law of Frequency, this episode brings a grounded, therapeutic perspective that cuts through the noise.

There’s no magical thinking here—just practical psychology, evidence-based mindset tools, and emotional mastery techniques that actually work.

This episode is for you if you’re ready to:
    • Break old patterns
    • Raise your emotional baseline
    • Tune into a more empowering mental state
    • Stop living life on autopilot
    • Become the conscious creator of your internal world
    • Move from fear and scarcity into clarity, presence, gratitude, and possibility

As a counsellor, hypnotherapist, life coach, and former Metropolitan Police detective, James blends therapeutic insight with straight-talking clarity, helping you understand why you think the way you think—and how to powerfully shift it.

If you’re ready to rewrite your own story and intentionally broadcast a new signal to your life, this episode will give you the tools, language, and mindset to begin.

  • Dad Wisdom That Changed My Life
    2025/10/13

When I was growing up, my dad always seemed to have the right tool for the job. Whether he was wallpapering, carving something out of wood, or building a concrete fireplace, I’d stand there watching — amazed — wondering how he just knew what to do.

One day, I asked him how he did it. His answer was simple:

    “You just do it.”

At the time, I didn’t get it. I thought he was dodging the question.
But years later, I realised those four words held a lifetime of dad wisdom — the kind that quietly shapes who we become.

In this episode, I share the story of how my father’s simple words became one of the greatest pieces of life wisdom I’ve ever received — a reminder that sometimes, you don’t need another plan, another book, or another reason to wait. You just need to start.

Whether you’re facing change, indecision, or self-doubt, this episode is for you. It’s part motivational speech, part reflection, and a gentle nudge to move forward — whatever your “it” might be.

👉 If you’re ready to take that next step in your own life, and could use some support along the way, book a consultation with me at Right Your Own Story. Together, we’ll explore what’s been holding you back and help you move confidently toward what’s next.

Because sometimes, the simplest words of wisdom — like the ones passed down from a father to a son — can change your life forever.
