  • I Decided at 16 That I Didn't Want to Become Bob
    2026/10/10

I Decided at 16 That I Didn't Want to Become Bob

What if the biggest thing standing between you and the life you want isn't the world around you, but the story you tell yourself?

When I was 16, I worked as a gardener for the city council and met an older colleague everyone called “Grumpy Bob”.

Bob had plenty of things he wanted to do. He wanted to go skiing, see the pyramids, and take a round-the-world cruise.

But every time he talked about an experience he wanted, he found a reason why he couldn't do it.

He might break his leg skiing. He might get ill in Egypt. The boat might sink.

And I realised something that would stay with me for the rest of my life.

It wasn't the pilot stopping Bob from flying, border control stopping him from visiting Egypt, or the captain stopping him from boarding the boat.

    It was Bob stopping Bob.

At 16, I decided I didn't want to become Bob.

In this personal story, I explain how that decision influenced my life, from becoming a police officer and detective to retraining as a therapist, counsellor, hypnotherapist, and life coach, writing books, and building Right Your Own Story.

I also explore how self-limiting beliefs, fear of failure, negative self-talk, and the stories we inherit can prevent us from pursuing the things we want.

We don't always realise we're limiting ourselves. Sometimes, we simply accept the beliefs we've been handed and pass them on to the next generation.

But what if we could challenge those beliefs and write a different story?

    In this episode, we'll explore:

    • How self-limiting beliefs hold us back.

    • Why fear of failure can prevent personal growth.

    • How our experiences shape what we believe is possible.

    • How to question the stories we tell ourselves.

    • Why we may have more potential than we realise.

    Ask yourself:

What have I talked myself out of doing?

Is the story I'm telling myself actually true?

What might I do if I trusted myself a little more?

  • What If You've Been Underestimating Yourself?
    2026/09/14

What if you've been underestimating yourself?

Sometimes a lack of confidence isn't really about what we're capable of — it's about the beliefs we've developed about ourselves.

In this episode, James Taylor shares a true story from his early days in the police that changed his career and reveals a powerful way to think about self-belief, confidence and the doors we open — and close — in our lives.

When I was a young probationer, I had no intention of becoming a detective.

Then, during a CID attachment, a frustrating prisoner interview and one simple lesson from an experienced detective changed the way I looked at the situation — and ultimately changed the direction of my career.

    The lesson involved a corridor.

    A corridor with doors.

And that simple image has stayed with me ever since.

Because perhaps we all carry a corridor like that inside ourselves.

Behind some doors are possibilities, opportunities and versions of ourselves we haven't yet discovered.

But behind others are old beliefs:

    “You can't.”

    “You're not good enough.”

    “It's too late.”

“That's not for people like you.”

Sometimes the doors we need to open are the ones we've been afraid to approach.

And sometimes the doors we need to close are the ones carrying old beliefs that no longer serve us.

    The question is:

How do you know what's behind a door you've never opened?

    In this episode, I explore:

    • Why we can underestimate our own abilities
    • How past experiences can influence self-belief
    • The difference between feeling incapable and actually being incapable
    • Why confidence doesn't always have to come before action
    • How experience can create evidence that changes what we believe about ourselves
    • The importance of questioning the beliefs we've carried for years
    • Why some doors need to be opened — while others need to be closed
    • What the words “You Can't” might represent in our own lives
    • How curiosity can sometimes be more useful than trying to force ourselves to feel confident
    • Why you don't need to see the whole path before taking the next step

You don't have to open every door.

But perhaps there's one you've already decided is locked.

    Maybe it's time to investigate.

  • The Dangerous Words We Say To Ourselves
    2026/05/19

The Dangerous Words We Say To Ourselves.

Do you ever catch yourself saying things like:

    “I ALWAYS get things wrong.”
    “I NEVER succeed.”
    “Nobody likes me.”
“Everything always goes badly for me.”

In this episode of Right Your Own Story, we explore the hidden psychological damage caused by negative self-talk and absolute thinking patterns such as “always,” “never,” “everyone,” and “nobody.”

These types of thoughts can quietly shape:

    • confidence,
    • anxiety,
    • self-esteem,
    • relationships,
    • emotional wellbeing,
    • and even the way we view ourselves and the world around us.

I explain why the brain falls into these patterns, how repeated negative thoughts can become emotionally convincing over time, and how harsh inner dialogue can slowly affect mental health, mindset, motivation, and personal growth.

    This episode also explores:

    • how negative thinking patterns develop,
    • why people become trapped in self-critical thinking,
    • how childhood experiences and criticism can shape internal dialogue,
    • and practical ways to challenge destructive thoughts and create healthier emotional balance.

    If you struggle with:

    • anxiety,
    • overthinking,
    • low self-esteem,
    • confidence issues,
    • people pleasing,
    • self-doubt,
    • emotional burnout,
    • or harsh inner criticism…

this episode may really resonate with you.

You’ll also learn practical mindset techniques to help challenge “always” and “never” thinking, improve emotional awareness, and develop a kinder and more balanced relationship with yourself.

If this episode helps you, please consider sharing it with somebody else who may need to hear it too.
