  • Radical Visibility with Sky Cubacub

    In season 5, episode 3, for Pride Month, we talk with creator of Rebirth Garments, Sky Cubacub.

    Sky Cubacub (They/Them/Theirs/Xey/Xem/Xyrs) is a nonbinary disabled Filipinx neuroqueer from Chicago, IL. They are the creator of Rebirth Garments, a line of wearables for trans, queer and disabled people of all sizes and ages, which started in summer 2014. Xey are the author of “Radical Visibility: a Queercrip Dress Reform Movement Manifesto” and the editor of the Radical Visibility Zine, a full color cut and paste style zine that celebrates disabled queer life. They also are a founding member of Radical Visibility Collective, which creates fashion performances with audio descriptive songs. Xey created Radical Fit, a free online queercrip DIY fashion program and fashion incubator with the Chicago Public Library which has a yearly summer celebration, Queer Radical Fair, at Ping Tom Park in Chicago. They are in the process of creating an online kids show about joyful disability access called “Sky and The Rebirth Warriors”. Xey have had over 60 fashion performances, lectures and has given workshops at galleries, museums, universities, and schools. Sky was named 2018 Chicagoan of the Year by the Chicago Tribune and was a 2019/2020 Kennedy Center Citizen Artist and a 2020 Disability Futures Fellow.

  • Know Your Immigrant Rights with Shekinah Deocares & Cheryl Deptowicz-Diaz

    For our final episode of Season 4, we talk with Senior Organizer at Pilipino Workers Center (PWC), Shekinah Deocares & attorney in family law & immigration law, Cheryl Deptowicz-Diaz.

    Shekinah (she/her) is a Filipina organizer born and raised in Los Angeles. Since 2019, she has been at Pilipino Workers Center fighting with and for community for immigrant and worker rights and climate justice.

    Cheryl Deptowicz-Diaz is an award-winning attorney and founder at Diaz Law Firm, a Southern California-based firm leading clients from the heart in the areas of family law, immigration, and litigation defense.

    With over 17 years of legal experience, Cheryl helps her clients through our complex justice system. As an immigrant and woman of color raised in inner-city Los Angeles, Cheryl has a unique perspective and compassion for her clients.

    Cheryl graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara with a Bachelor of Arts in Asian American Studies. She attended the evening program at Southwestern University School of Law while she worked during the day. She clerked for the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office and the Alliance for Children’s Rights before earning her Juris Doctor in 2006. She is licensed by the State Bar of California and admitted in all California courts.

    Her awards include the NAACP Excellence Award, Distinguished Service Award, Asian American Studies Highest GPA Award, Southwestern Law Writing Achievement Award, SuperLawyers, and Lawyers of Distinction, and more.

    Cheryl volunteers throughout Southern California and Northern Mexico conducting Know Your Rights workshops. In all of her endeavors, she aims to bridge systemic divisions of race, sex, gender, and class.

    For our tenth episode of Season 4, we talk with Dr. Stephanie Cariaga, Ph.D., Associate Professor in Teacher Education at California State University, Dominguez Hills.

    Stephanie Cariaga, PhD, has served the wider Los Angeles community for over eighteen years as a high school and middle school literacy teacher, founding member of the People’s Education Movement, and now an associate professor in teacher education at California State University, Dominguez Hills. Rooted in radical feminist epistemology that centers wholeness, healing, and intimacy, her teaching and research examines the intersections between healing justice, critical literacy, and critical teacher sustainability. She is inspired by her best teachers – her kids Laila and Catalino.

    Meet Dr. Jaclyn Tolentino, a Board-Certified Family Physician practicing holistic and whole-body medicine, with an emphasize on disease prevention, longevity, women’s health, and hormone optimization. She combines extensive training through the Institute for Functional Medicine with additional education in Ayurvedic healing, Quantum Biology, and integrative oncology & immune support. Her practice brings a comprehensive, root-cause based approach to the care of both Florida and California-based patients as the Lead Functional Medicine Physician at Love.Life in Los Angeles, CA.

    A frequent expert contributor to publications including Well+Good, CNET, MindBodyGreen, and Women's Health, Dr. Tolentino has also been featured in Vogue and the Wall Street Journal. When she's not caring for her patients, Dr. Tolentino enjoys catching sunsets on the beach with her family, and proudly advocating for her fellow young breast cancer warriors.

  • Dying with Dignity with Michelle Mondia & Minda Sanchez

    For our eighth episode of Season 4, we talk with Michelle Mondia, death midwife and Minda Sanchez, death doula.

    Michelle Mondia started her work as a death midwife 15 years ago. She specializes in home funerals, green burials, and culturally specific end-of-life practices. As an advocate for more equitable end-of-life practices, Michelle founded the Death Workers Alliance, a space dedicated to supporting BIPOC death doulas and serving marginalized communities.     Minda Sanchez is an end of life planner, death doula, altar builder and community weaver based in Boston, Massachusetts. She is a founding member of The Doula Guild and Your Village Doulas.
