    Fall asleep inside history. Tonight you are a passenger on a stern wheel packet boat leaving St. Louis at dusk in the autumn of 1876, steaming south down the Mississippi through a calm and starry night. You take supper in the long white cabin, walk the quiet guards while the towns slide past, look in at the engine room watch and the darkened pilot house where a man steers twelve hundred remembered miles of river, and listen as the leadsman sings the depth of the water up out of the dark, two soft words that mean all is well. The great wheel turns astern like a heartbeat, the boat ties up if fog ever closes the river, and your berth waits in a small white stateroom where the light comes gently through the transom.

    You will hear the steady soft churn of the stern wheel, water sliding along a wooden hull, the slow deep sigh of the scape pipes, the gentle working creak of a big timber boat, and far off, the leadsman's call and one whistle answered across the water.

    This is a four hour sleep story. The narration ends softly a little past the three hour mark, and then the river runs on beneath you until the fourth hour. Black screen friendly.

    The Richest Man Who Ever Lived | The True Story of Mansa Musa, Told for a Calm Night

    Mansa Musa of Mali is often called the richest man who ever lived, and this is his true story, told slowly and gently so you can fall asleep inside it. He ruled the Mali Empire at its height, from about 1312 to about 1337, a realm of gold fields and salt mines and river cities that took months to cross. In 1324 he set out on the pilgrimage to Mecca with a caravan the chroniclers could barely count, crossing the Sahara by starlight, and gave away so much gold in Cairo that the price of gold there, by one careful contemporary account, stayed low for a dozen years. He met the sultan of Egypt in one of history's politest standoffs, ran short of money on the way home like any traveler, and returned with something better than what he had spent: scholars, books, and a poet of Granada who built for him. He raised mosques at Timbuktu and Gao, and the city of Timbuktu grew into one of the great centers of learning on earth, its libraries alive to this day. We tell the story the way the chroniclers told it, al Umari, Ibn Battuta, Ibn Khaldun, and we say so gently wherever the legend has outgrown the evidence.

Tonight you are on a winter road in the far north of Russia, about a hundred and fifty years ago, when snow closes the way and a village church rings its bell through the storm to bring you in. A peasant family opens their door, and the whole slow evening of a northern izba unfolds around you: the great brick stove that fills a quarter of the room and stays warm all night, the singing samovar and the long unhurried tea, black bread and honey and mushrooms salted from the autumn woods, the spinning wheel humming by splinter light, the grandmother telling an old tale of Frost while the children listen from the sleeping shelf, felt boots drying, the storm heard soft through log walls chinked with moss, and at the end of it all the warmest bed human beings ever built, made up for you on the broad warm back of the stove itself.

    You will hear the wind moving around the log walls, fine dry snow hissing at the little windows, the deep soft tick of the great stove giving back its heat all night, and through the wall the horse and the cow settling in the covered yard.

    This is a three hour sleep story with an extended narration. The story ends softly around the 2 hour 45 minute mark, and then the snow and the warm stove continue to the third hour. Black screen friendly.

You will learn how the horizon is a ring of doors where the stars rise and set, how one star hands the course to the next all night long, how the navigator reads the long ocean swell through the hull with his body, and how an island reaches out to meet a canoe with clouds and birds a full day before it can be seen. The evening meal is cooked on a hearth of sand as the sun goes down, the wake glows with the sea's own light, and everyone sleeps because one man who has never been lost is awake beside the sail.

    You will hear water running gently along two hulls, two voices of water braided together, the soft working creak of the lashings as the platform breathes with the swell, a steady warm trade wind, and the woven sail filling and settling overhead.

    The Sky Belonged to Her | The True Story of Bessie Coleman, Told for a Calm Night

    Bessie Coleman picked cotton in Texas, washed laundry for years, and decided the sky belonged to her. This is her true story, told slowly and gently so you can fall asleep inside it. Born in Atlanta, Texas in 1892, one of thirteen children, she walked four miles to a one room school, kept the family's cotton tally so nobody could cheat them, and read by lamplight from a traveling library wagon. Every flight school in the United States refused her, because she was Black and because she was a woman. So she learned French at night after work, sailed to France, trained at the Caudron brothers' school on the coast of the Somme, and on June 15, 1921 became the first Black woman in the world to earn a pilot's license. She came home Queen Bess, flew air shows from New York to Texas, refused to perform anywhere Black spectators were barred at the gate, walked off a movie set rather than play a demeaning part, survived a crash and wired her friends that as soon as she could walk she would fly, and saved everything toward a flight school for Black aviators. Her life was short, and this story is honest about that, briefly and gently, the way you would tell it to a child at bedtime; and then it keeps going, because her story kept going: the Bessie Coleman Aero Clubs, the first all Black air show in America, flowers dropped from biplanes over her grave for decades, and the photograph of her that astronaut Mae Jemison carried into orbit in 1992.

Tonight you climb the red hill above Granada more than six hundred years ago, in the golden age of the Nasrid sultans, and you are taken in for the night as a guest of the court in the Alhambra itself. An old secretary of the palace walks you through the courtyards one by one as the lamps are lit: the long still pool that holds the moon, the hall whose cedar ceiling is a map of the seven heavens, the new courtyard where twelve marble lions carry a fountain and the water runs in channels under the arcades. You learn the secret of how a whole river was persuaded to climb the hill, so that every fountain in the palace is fed by nothing but falling water. You learn to read the carved writing that covers the walls, including the six words the palace repeats more than any others. Then the last call to prayer floats up from the city, the lamps go out one by one, and you are shown to a quiet room off a courtyard where a small fountain talks softly all night long.

    You will hear water all night long, the signature sound of the palace: a narrow channel running, a small fountain close by, one deeper fountain falling far off, with a nightingale far down the valley and the hush of a warm summer night on the hill.

    This is an extended sleep story of three and a half hours. The narration ends softly near the third hour, and then the fountains continue alone until the end. Black screen friendly.
