  • S5 E75- Bonus Episode: The Truth About Food Dyes: Health Risks, Hidden Names, and How to Protect Your Family
    2024/10/02

In this Bonus Episode, We dive into the hidden dangers of synthetic food dyes—those bright reds, blues, and yellows that make our food look fun, but may be impacting our health in ways you might not expect. I’ll walk you through the health risks of the most common dyes like Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 2, and even Titanium Dioxide and Caramel Color.

Plus, I’ll break down how companies are using sneaky new names for these dyes to make them harder to spot, and what you can do to protect your family.

We’ll also talk about Vani Hari, aka Foodbabe, and her efforts to hold major corporations like Kellogg’s accountable. Did you know they promised to remove dyes in 2015 but have instead added even more cereals filled with synthetic colorings? Together, we can make a difference by taking a few simple steps.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode:

    • The health risks associated with synthetic food dyes, including behavior changes, allergies, and cancer.
    • The most common dyes found in our foods: Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Blue 2, and their sneaky new names.
    • How colors like red, yellow, and blue are strategically used in foods to affect your emotions and hunger levels.
    • Why countries like Canada and those in Europe have stricter regulations on food dyes than the U.S.

Three Actions You Can Take Right Now:

    1. Educate your family and friends: Start talking about food dyes. Share this episode with others so they can make informed choices.
    2. Read your ingredients: Take a moment to look at the ingredient list of the foods you’re buying. If you see any synthetic dyes (or their new names, like Allura Red AC or Tartrazine), consider choosing another product that’s safer for your health.
    3. Sign the petition: Join Vani (Foodbabe) and her army of mamas demanding change. On October 15th, they will serve a petition to Kellogg’s headquarters to remove harmful food dyes from their products. You can sign the petition here: Sign the petition to Kellogg's.

What Are Food Dyes Made From? Many of these dyes are derived from petroleum, the same oil that’s used to make gasoline and asphalt. Some also contain heavy metals and chemicals that raise red flags for their impact on health, especially in kids.

Common Food Dyes, Their New Names, and Health Risks:

    • Red 40 (Allura Red AC): Linked to hyperactivity in children and potential cancer risk.
    • Yellow 5 (Tartrazine): Associated with allergies and behavioral issues in kids.
    • Yellow 6 (Sunset Yellow FCF): Linked to adrenal and kidney issues, as well as potential tumors in animal studies.
    • Blue 2 (Indigotine): Research suggests a possible connection to brain tumors.
    • Green 3: Linked to cancer in animal studies.
    • Titanium Dioxide: Used to make foods bright white, but banned in the EU for its potential to cause DNA damage.
    • Caramel Color: Contains 4-methylimidazole, which has been classified as a possible carcinogen.

Join the Movement for Transparency and Health: Vani Hari has been leading the charge for food transparency for years, and she’s proven that we can push companies to make better decisions. Kellogg’s promised change back in 2015 but instead introduced new cereals like Peeps and ICEE that are packed with harmful dyes. Now, it’s time to hold them accountable.
