Beyond spiritual bypassing: Integrating Spirituality and the Body for best healing results

How One Therapist Moved From Non-Duality to Embodied Wholeness

    🌟 Podcast Description

What happens when spiritual realization meets unresolved pain in the body? In this powerful and vulnerable episode, we explore the vital connection between spiritual practices and body-centered healing.

Shauna welcomes Ali, a seasoned therapist and coach with 20+ years of diverse experience, to unpack the limitations of purely spiritual approaches like non-duality when it comes to real, human suffering—and the transformational power of returning to the body.

Whether you’re on a spiritual path that’s left your body behind, or a healing journey that’s seeking deeper soul integration, this episode is your reminder: Healing and wholeness lives in the union of both.

    👤 Meet Our Guest: Ali

Ali is a holistic therapist, cognitive hypnotherapist, breathwork facilitator, and meditation practitioner with over two decades of experience. Having trained in the Three Principles, non-duality and somatic practices, she brings a rare integration of mind, body, and spirit. Her own healing journey through anxiety, disconnection, and spiritual bypassing led her to the profound work of inner child reconnection and the embodied wisdom of the “incorr” method.

🧩 In This Episode, We Explore:

    • Ali’s personal and professional journey from nutritional medicine to deep spiritual and body-based work

    • The promises and blind spots of non-dual spiritual teachings

    • Why body-based healing is essential, especially for those with trauma, anxiety, or emotional overwhelm

    • How the body holds memory and why reconnection can be painful but necessary

    • The importance of integrating spiritual insight with embodied presence

    • The practitioner's role in meeting clients with nuance, safety, and individualized support

    • How reconnecting with the body leads not away from spirituality, but deeper into it

    💡 Reflection Questions for Listeners:

    1. Have I used spiritual practices to avoid feeling discomfort or pain in my body?

    2. What might shift if I brought loving attention to my body’s unmet needs?

    3. How do I know when I’m bypassing—and what helps me return?

    🧘🏽‍♀️ Final Word

There is no need to choose between your spirit and your body. In fact, your deepest healing may come when the two are in loving dialogue. Listen in and be reminded: your essence lives not above the body, but through it.

  • Understanding Emotional Shutdown in Trauma Therapy - Part 1
    2025/02/04

    Send us a text

Are you a Therapist, Counsellor or Coach?

Are you passionate about helping your client find and heal the root cause of their suffering but find that they frequently get stuck in the therapeutic process ?

Does any of the following sound familiar ?

    • Clients who have an inability to discuss or bring awareness of difficult emotions
    • Clients who are stuck in story, often blaming others
    • Clients who have an inability to access their emotional content due to the fear of nervous system activation, resulting in you fearing to re-traumatise your client
    • An inability for your client to identify the source of their suffering, therefore feeling hopeless and leading to comorbidity.
    • Clients who become stuck and fail to fully commit to the therapeutic process with frequent DNA’s

As therapists, we know the answer is to find the source of their suffering and that source is deep in the unexplored depths of past experiences. These unique experiences are locked into the body and mind.

The reality though, for most of our clients, is that being invited to the source of that pain is terrifying. For them, those depths are simply not a safe place to be and, as a result, the wonderful, benevolent tool - the mind, says ” No, we will NOT go there! “

When this happens, your client becomes stuck and therefore blocked from further therapeutic processing.

Facilitating our clients to safely & without re-traumatising, find the source of their suffering is vital to successfully complete their therapeutic process. We need a scaffolding process that safely facilitates the clients access and exploration of their wounded self.

In this episode, we'll be focusing on moving beyond the narratives and getting deeper into the embodied emotional experiences for your clients. You'll learn the four components of emotional shutdown and the roadmap for understanding why it is so difficult for our clients to move beyond 'story'.

    2024/05/02

In today’s episode I’m joined by the founder of Roe Valley Therapy Centre, Siobhan Wison-McGlinchey. We are talking about anxiety in children. What are its presenting issues, treatment and what we can do as parents to help ourselves to help our children.

A quick google search will tell you that in Northern Ireland alone: ‘1 in 8 children and young people meet the diagnostic criteria for common mood and anxiety disorders’.

I can certainly reiterate that as it’s something that I am asked to work with every single day and Siobhan is my first referral pathway.

A qualified child & adolescent psychotherapist, humanistic integrative counsellor and a play therapist, Siobhan is known as ‘The Creative Psychotherapist’. She specialises in working with early developmental trauma and is passionate about working with both children and adults. As well as her 1-1 sessions, Siobhan has also developed a number of programmes and workshops which I’ll link in the show notes below.

  • Jason Shiers: Hope Beyond the System's Diagnosis & What We Are Told
    2023/11/22

    Send us a text

In today’s episode I’m joined by psychotherapist, Jason Shiers.

From the age of 10 years old, Jason had 15 different diagnoses in the mental health system and was told by professionals that he had depression. They even questioned if he was ever going to get better. But he knew that these ‘diagnosis’ were only a description of his symptoms. He also knew that the current systems were not set up to help him find the cause.

“I could sit in the dark, it was comfortable there but no one knew where the light switch was. No one ever pointed me within or what that meant. I didn’t know that joy existed”

Today Jason is the founder of ‘Wide World Coaching’, creator of the ‘Infite Recovery Project’ and host of ‘Misunderstandings of the Mind’ podcast. So, I think you’ll agree this is an amazing story of transformation.

At the very end of our conversation, I asked Jason “if you had of heard our conversation today, all them years ago when you were in that darkness what would you have thought?”

He said this: “I would like to think that I would have sensed that there was something different from what I know in the suffering. A different place to look, a different way to see things. Hope…

I believe that we all have the ability to heal ourselves from within. It is my mission to show you how. It is my hope that these conversations go some way to help you on your own journey, so let's begin.

  • Blocks to Healing - Pt.3 Hierarchy of Pain
    2023/10/12

    Send us a text

I believe that we all have the ability to heal ourselves from within. It is my mission to show you how. It is my hope that these conversations go some way to help you on your own journey.

In the last 2 episodes we’ve talked about primary & secondary pain. Today, to finish off the series we’re going to look at ‘the hierarchy of pain’

All three of these are interlinked and are a particular phenomenon during the healing journey but where we begin today in this discussion is the dissolving of the secondary pain.

I’m going to read for you part of the 7th chapter of the book and while you are listening or watching on youtube, again my intention is for you to think about your own inner world - Can you see your own hierarchy of pain?

I’ve also linked below to the complete chapter of the book. When you have listened to this episode I suggest reading that chapter and working through the short exercises that are included. This will help you immensely on your healing journey.

  • Blocks to Healing. Pt.2 - Primary Pain

I believe that we all have the ability to heal ourselves from within. It is my mission to show you how. It is my hope that these conversations go some way to help you on your own journey.

Last week talked about secondary pain. Today we’re going to have an indepth look into primary pain, what it means and how it drives secondary pain .

I’m going to read for you part of the 2nd chapter of book and while you are listening or watching on youtube my intention is for you to think about your own inner world - what is your secondary pain & what is your primary pain. Can you identify the difference?

Primary pain is the root cause of our whole pain experience and is felt in the emotional body. It is the endless thought streams. The endless stream of words, thoughts, ideas, identification and evidence of the pain you are experiencing and often it’s not available to our consciousness.

    Let me explain, let’s begin.
