  • Show Notes: Episode Overview: In today's episode, we tackle six prevalent myths about money in the church and shed light on the misconceptions that hinder financial growth and stewardship. We unravel these myths and present a biblical perspective on managing finances in line with God's principles. Key Points Covered: Money Myth #1: Money is Evil: We explore the misconception that money itself is evil, debunking it with biblical references that emphasize the importance of stewardship and the proper use of wealth. Money Myth #2: Trusting God Negates Budgeting: Addressing the notion that trusting God eliminates the need for budgeting, we highlight the biblical mandate for wise stewardship and financial planning. Money Myth #3: Borrowing Money to Grow the Church: We challenge the belief that borrowing money is essential for church growth, emphasizing the risks of debt bondage and the importance of faithful stewardship. Money Myth #4: Bi-Vocational Ministry is the Answer to Our Financial Challenges: Dispelling the idea that bivocational ministry is a cost-saving measure, we discuss the challenges and biblical principles related to fair compensation for church leaders. Money Myth #5: Pastors Shouldn't Earn Adequate Salaries: We address the misconception surrounding pastors' salaries, emphasizing the biblical principle of fair compensation for labor and the importance of financial stability for church leaders. Full Transcript [00:00:00] Introduction Joy Suzanne Hunt: Welcome to the Pastors & Money Podcast, where we help pastors, ministry leaders, and churches start thriving financially using money as a tool to fuel God's mission in our churches and our families. I'm your host, Joy Suzanne Hunt. I'm a pastor and a financial coach. My goal is to create a space to have conversations about the challenges and the opportunities we all face when it comes to money. You can find the episode show notes, free resources, and more at pastorsandmoney.com. And here's the show. A Biblical Mindset for Church Finances Joy Suzanne: So in this episode, we're going to debunk several church money myths. I'm excited for this episode because I know for me, even growing up or growing up in ministry too, that I've heard some of these things and [00:01:00] they really can impede our discipleship in terms of finances, but also impede the growth and the health of our church. So we want to make sure that our mindset is a biblical one that we're following in line with what God wants for us. Scripture tells us to be transformed by renewing our minds. Sometimes that means fresh information or clearing out information that isn't as accurate as maybe we thought it was, or just that we hadn't really thought about. So here are some of those money myths that we hear in the church. Money Myth #1: Money is Evil: So the first church money myth is this idea that money is evil or rich people are evil. Well, the truth is money itself is not evil. First Timothy 6:10 says it's the love of money that leads to wrongdoing. The love of money, not money itself. There's this great illustration that I remember from taking Financial Peace University, where it talks about a brick. The brick can [00:02:00] be used to build a house or a hospital, right? But a brick can also be used to crash through a window. The brick isn't good or evil, it's amoral. The brick doesn't have morals. And money is the same way. Money does not have morals either way, but how it is used can be good or it can be evil. And it's really a reflection of the person using it. Somebody who's grumpy with a little bit of money is going to be grumpy with a lot of money, but they're going to be more grumpy, right? It's just going to magnify whatever we are.
