  • Captain Obvious and Knowing Your Subject
    2021/12/13

You wouldn’t turn up for a job interview unprepared, and nor should you turn up to your podcast interview without knowing something about your guest. Research is fundamental to getting the most out of any interview you do.

In this episode of Elevating Experts, Captain Obvious pops back in to discuss one of the finer points of producing a podcast – research! Here are some of our top tips:

    • Know who your guest is
    • Know what your guest is talking about
    • Look for new ways to engage them on their story

Dorothy Dix was a pseudonym for American Journalist and columnist, Elizabeth Meriwether Gilmer. Whilst people use the term “Dorothy Dixer” in a derogatory form for when questions are framed to support the speaker’s response, she was much more heavily involved in the suffragette movement than this attribute give her credit for. Read a bit more about her here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorothy_Dix

    Hook

Andy: The best way to get the most out of any interview you do is good old research. I’m Andy Le Roy

Louise: And I’m Louise Poole, and we’re giving you the insights to help elevate you as an expert in your field

    [Elevating Experts]

Andy: Hey Louise, remember the time you gave the name of someone to one of your producers to line up an interview and they secured the wrong person?

Louise: Like it was only yesterday, Andy, or that time another producer didn’t quite go the extra step in finding out about a potential guest, then locked them in for what turned out to be a disappointingly shallow interview

Andy: I mean, I don’t want to sound nasty, but

    Louise: I know… it’s time for a chat with

    Sting: Captain Obvious

Louise: Hey there Captain Obvious, looks like Andy has mysteriously stepped out again just as you flashed in

Captain Obvious: It’s always the guilty who run first, Louise mwhahahaha

Louise: I say nothing, Captain Obvious, but you’ve been looking over our careers, you’ve got the benefit of our hindsight… where did we, and other new players in the field go wrong?

Captain Obvious: Very good question, Louise. One of the first things you really need to do is know something about your guest.

Louise: It sounds kind of obvious…

Captain Obvious: That’s my name, don’t wear it out… but it’s something painfully simple, and excruciatingly important! What are the odds of finding someone with very similar skills and the same name?

Louise: Pretty small, I would have thought

Captain Obvious: True, but small is not zero. You know as well as I do that detail is important

Louise: Gotcha, so when I say to my producer, see if you can get hold of the musician Brian May

    Captain Obvious: yes… go on…

Louise: I should probably add that the Brian May I want to talk to is the one who plays guitar for Queen… otherwise…

Captain: you could very well be launching into a conversation about Bohemian Rhapsody to the other Brian May who composed the score for Mad Max.

    Louise: Awkward

Captain Obvious: And while we’re at it

    Louise:...

  • Generating Word Of Mouth
    2021/10/11

If you’re feeling a bit stumped on how to get the grow your audience and get the most out of your branded podcast, consider how your experience and network can do the heavy lifting.

In this episode of Elevating Experts, Andy and Louise discuss generating word of mouth, but here are some of our top tips:

    • Podcasting relationships are one to one
    • People trust those they know
    • Podcasting is like a friendly conversation, not a sales pitch

The importance of Word Of Mouth: https://www.forbes.com/sites/kimberlywhitler/2014/07/17/why-word-of-mouth-marketing-is-the-most-important-social-media/?sh=1e1edcc554a8

    Episode Transcript:

Andy: Feeling a bit stumped on how to get the most out of your branded podcast? Sometimes we just need to let our experience do the heavy lifting. I’m Andy Le Roy.

Louise: And I’m Louise Poole, and together, we giving you the insights to elevate you as an expert in your field.

    [Elevating Experts]

Andy: we’ve got lots of things available to us nowadays to help us grow our audience and our networks

Louise: but have you thought about the fact that the easiest way to grow your network is to use your current network to support your growth strategy?

Andy: it’s exactly the principle that a site like LinkedIn works on, and something that you can work equally as well with, with your own branded podcast.

Louise: It’s all about community building, whatever way you look at, so let’s check out how we can build word of mouth in the 21st century

Andy: in days gone by we had the trusty corner store

Louise: you love your corner store analogy don’t you Andy!

Andy: you know I do, and there’s a really good reason why… Be cause when I was a little boy I used to live across the road from a corner shop, and everybody in the community used to gravitate there to learn all about the local news… Also known as gossip… But you get the picture

Louise: yes, I think I do! But it’s also a really good analogy because what we are seeing now is that people want some reliable places to go to get the information and help they need, much like they used to do before Internet technology was available

Andy: that’s right, regardless of the method, we are all still human beings and we want to connect, and the things that we connect through are still the things that interest us and from a source we trust

Louise: as the 20th century drew to a close, we had grown bigger and bigger with our forms of broadcast media, but over the last 20 years that has all started to change and we are now seeing a very new media landscape

Andy: rather than a few major operators having control over what is produced and released, we now have a situation where the tools of production are much more easily available to anybody who wants to use them, and that means that the 21st century version of the corner store is now taking shape

Louise: just like the relationship used to be between shop owner and their local community of customers, podcasting is a one to one relationship.

Andy: stay with us here… dear listener… as we’re talking to you right now, chances are you’re listening in your own way and in your own time. That’s a one to one connection.

Louise: there’s also the connections we make as podcasters when we interview guests

Andy: every one of those conversations is also one to one, and when we interview somebody that conversation is heard not only by you and the other listeners for this podcast, but that guest will also share th...

  • Protecting Your Voice
    2021/09/27

In this episode of Elevating Experts, Andy and Louise chat about how to look after your best asset as a podcaster: your voice! Here are some of our top tips:

    At all stages:

    • Never yell, disappointment doesn’t need a strained voice
    • Listen to how your body responds to different products
    • Let your body recover instead of masking its pain

You’re all set with a bunch of scripts to batch record some episodes, or maybe you’ve day full of Zoom meetings… either way there’s a real risk you could end up with a very tired and hoarse voice at the end of it all. We’re here to tell you that doesn’t need to happen and how to avoid it!

    Episode Transcript:

Louise: So, you listened to our advice and decided to batch out a whole bunch of podcast episodes. Great! Only problem is now after you’ve recorded all those scripts, your voice is a little hoarse. Stop! Don’t say another word! We’re going to give you some hints and tips on how you can protect your voice. I’m Louise Poole.

Andy: and I’m Andy Le Roy and we’re elevating you as an expert in your field.

    [elevating experts]

Louise: You’ve got such a beautiful voice for podcasts or at least you did that until you went and strained it.

Andy: And it’s not just on podcasts, sometimes I find when we talk on zoom all day I get a little bit hoarse.

Louise: That’s because you’re not looking after yourself Andy. And we all about self care here! Especially when it comes to one of our great assets as podcasters – our voice.

Andy: Why do I get the sense that there’s a lesson from Doctor Poole coming?

Louise: Well, what’s the point of having fake qualification if I can’t use it? Do you know how vocal sound is made?

    Andy: Educate me, Doctor Poole!

Louise: It’s created by activating your vocal folds which are also known as the vocal cords. But they’re not really chords they’re folds of mucous membrane. The folds work when you exhale air by coming together and vibrating thousands of times per second to produce sound.

Andy: So, like a cricket’s legs?

    Louise: Howzat?

    Andy: Never mind.

Louise: So, when you breathe properly, these folds come together gently and produce a warm pleasant voice. But poor breathing or not treating those vocal cords with care, can result in a strained voice or one that’s painful when you’re trying to speak.

Andy: Is this why you keep encouraging me to drink cups of tea?

Louise: We’ll get to that, plus it’s full of antioxidants and Doctor Poole approved. Do you know about diaphragmatic breathing?

Andy: Yeah. That’s when you allow your belly to extend out every time you inhale. it’s the body’s natural way of breathing, but sometimes we breathe by moving our chest instead, especially when we’re feeling anxious or nervous.

Louise: The easiest way to practice diaphragmatic breathing, is by placing one hand on your belly and one on your chest then inhale through your nose for two seconds, feel the air move into your abdomen and feel your stomach move out. Then breathe out and push the belly.

Andy: Are you teaching us how to meditate or protect out voice there Doctor Poole?

Louise: Why not both? If you’re a bit more zen, you’re less likely to yell and strain your voice. Besides telling someone your disappointed in them is much more of an effective motivator than yelling…

Andy: Um… an unexpected tip from today’s show I guess.

Louise: Try not to raise your voice and yell or scream. And particularly don’t scream-sing every song at a Maroon 5 concert and expect to be able to talk properly for the next week.

    Andy: What about the tea?

Louise: Oh yes, tea. So, you want to keep those vocal folds hydrated. If your mucous membrane gets dry your voice gets raspy.

    Andy: D...

  • Captain Obvious and the Triple Check Rule
    2021/09/21

In this episode of Elevating Experts, Andy and Louise chat to Captain Obvious about how to effectively proof read you work, but here are some of our top tips:

    At all stages:

    • Spot spell-checked words
    • Carefully read for spelling and grammar
    • Read aloud to spot hidden errors

Captain Obvious says “forget the double check rule! Triple checking is the way to go!”

Different ways to quality check your drafts and other work will make sure annoying typos don’t make it through.

    Episode Transcript:

Andy: you’ve proudly hit publish on your latest post and your colleague taps you on the shoulder and says

Louise: Andy, did you know you made a typo in that meme?

Andy: Why are the gods against me? I’m Andy Le Roy

Louise: And I’m Louise Poole, and we’re giving you the insights to help elevate you as an expert in your field

    [Elevating Experts]

Andy: I’m pretty sure I know where we’re going with this one Louise, but it does seem like I’m responsible for my fair share of little blips on our road to batch completion

Louise: you definitely know where we’re going Andy, it’s time to sit back and have a little listen to our good friend…

    [Sting: Captain Obvious]

Louise: hey there Captain Obvious, it’s lovely to see you again!

Captain Obvious: well hello there Louise, I didn’t think I’d see you again quite so soon, what have you done this time?

Louise: No, no, captain obvious, it’s Andy this time… he seems to have a little issue with typos in memes at the moment…

Captain Obvious: well as much as I like the lad, I’m really not surprised. Let’s give him a little bit of education on how to spot those errors

Louise: I feel like it’s really a case of just slowing down and double checking your work, right?

Captain Obvious: slowing down is an excellent piece of advice Louise. If you go a little bit slower while you’re working, you will save yourself a lot of time further down the track. But I’m really not such a fan of double checking

Louise: what? Captain Obvious doesn’t double check his work?

Captain Obvious: No. I triple check my work!

Louise: oh! Now I get it!

Captain Obvious: when you’re drafting your work, that’s the perfect time to triple check what you’ve written. For every line that you write, there’s bound to be a little mistake that creeps in that you don’t spot while you’re in the creative flow

Louise: so why wouldn’t I just double check what I’ve written?

Captain Obvious: on the first time ‘round I would glance over it and see if there are any obvious things that have been picked up by the spellchecker and grammar check. On the next run through I have a very focused read of what’s on the page to see if anything stands out.

Louise: surely that’s enough after you’ve done that?

Captain Obvious: well, you might think so my dear, but Captain Obvious also likes to read it out aloud in one final check. It’s really quite amazing what you pick up on the page when you start to talk it out aloud

Louise: so that’s that, all checked and perfect at that point, yeah?

Captain Obvious: maybe, but that’s not the last time you are going to be working with that text. What about when you copy and paste it over to one of your graphics?

Louise: I’ll double check to make sure it’s transferred correctly?

    Captain Obvious: Ahemmmmmm

    Louise: trrrriple.. check… got it

Captain Obvious: always triple cheque your work at whatever stage you are, because as soon as you hit that publish button, if there is a mistake you are going to have to go right back to where that mistake originated and correct it and do all of those steps again

Louise: yes, we did have a case like that recently where we got all ex...
