ABOUT THIS MESSAGE:
Advent is a season of waiting. We wait for Christmas to come, and we prepare our hearts as we wait for Jesus to return. And waiting is difficult. It is especially difficult when we’re waiting and unable to change our present situation on our own. But that’s exactly what today’s readings from Scripture tell us. This Savior is for people who are held captive by the enemies of sin and death. It is for people who have no power of their own to free themselves. It is for people whose only hope is to patiently and quietly wait for God to act. It is for people who depend on him to set them free. And that’s exactly what our Savior does. He sets us free from a forced servitude to our enemies and replaces it with a free service to our Father.

ABOUT THIS MESSAGE:
How does our God work? He is attentive to the humble, but scatters the proud. He brings down those seated on thrones and lifts up those bowed low. He fills up the hungry but sends the rich away empty. He makes himself the servant of his own servant, Israel. God’s way is the exact opposite of the world’s way. Mary wasn’t rich, powerful, or famous. She was an ordinary young woman. Yet through her, God brought the Savior into the world – the one who would lift up the humble and bring hope to all people. Mary’s story reminds us that Christmas isn’t about what we do for God, but about what God has done, and is still doing, for the world.

ABOUT THIS MESSAGE:
Today kicks off the season of the church year called “Advent.” During the season of Advent, we prepare our hearts for the coming of our Savior. In the same way that believers eagerly awaited the Lord’s first coming at Christmas, so believers today eagerly await his return on the Last Day. When we understand who our Savior is and what it is that he brings, our hearts are eager for his arrival. The question now is “How do we prepare?” The answer is simple: Repent. John the Baptist was sent to prepare the way for the Lord, calling sinners to repentance. Today, God sends his Word ahead of his arrival to call us to repentance. Christians prepare daily by confessing sins and embracing the promise of forgiveness.

ABOUT THIS MESSAGE:
This Sunday is the last Sunday of the Church Year. Throughout the year, we have seen how Jesus is a King who is very different from the rest of history’s kings. Christ’s unique reign takes center stage as the Church Year draws to a close. Today’s readings highlight the beautiful and unexpected truth that he reigns as King in the interest of the subjects he rules. In order to defeat our enemies and rescue us from their dominion, our King came to wear a crown of thorns. By doing so, however, he became our righteousness and opened the door for us to enter paradise. Though this Sunday puts Christ’s reign in special focus, it is at work every time he serves his subjects with the gospel as they gather in his name.

ABOUT THIS MESSAGE:
Many people assume that judgment leads to conflict, not peace. However, lack of judgment is not something we can afford. Our world is full of victims of abuse, violence, and oppression, and in many cases, evil goes unnoticed or unpunished. A future without hope of judgment is a future without peace. And if there is no hope of judgment, victims would be driven to despair or to be consumed by a desire for revenge. A future that includes judgment, however, gives those who are wronged the peace of knowing that one day there will be perfect justice. Today we hear God’s promise to return and bring perfect judgment and justice. The effect of that promise is peace, knowing that every wrong will eventually be righted by the righteous Judge.

ABOUT THIS MESSAGE:
An organization’s mission statement attempts to articulate what makes it what it is. It spells out why it exists, what it has to offer, and what sets it apart from others. What makes our God who he is? What can he offer to sinners? Today’s readings provide an unmistakable answer. More than anything else, God’s unprompted and undeserved love for sinners – called “grace” – makes him who he is and sets him apart from other gods. Even before the law works in our hearts, God’s grace prompts him to come looking for us long before we ever find him. God’s grace is at the heart of what could easily serve as a mission statement for Jesus’ work as the Savior: “The Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” Praise be to God!

ABOUT THIS MESSAGE:
Today we celebrate “All Saints Day.” God grants the status of “saint” to every believer. It might appear that status is of little practical value. If you achieve the status of “billionaire” your life will most likely be vastly different than most others, in good ways. But if God calls you a saint, just like everyone else you will struggle with trials, temptations, and sin. Being a saint does not make life easier. It makes it more difficult as we struggle in a world that is hostile to God. This week we get to peer with the eyes of faith to see the saints enjoying glory in the place where “there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain. Sainthood truly is a precious gift, and we will soon join that scene. And that gives us stamina to continue!

ABOUT THIS MESSAGE:
Many people believe that freedom means being able to do whatever you want. Jesus teaches us that is absolutely false. “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” If we take the attitude that freedom means we can do whatever we want, we actually end up a slave. You will only be free – spiritually, emotionally, eternally – “if you hold to my teaching” and therefore “know the truth.” Truth is the cause that effects freedom. As we celebrate Reformation Sunday today, let us recommit ourselves to the basic truths of salvation: that we have been saved by God’s grace alone, through faith in Christ alone, a truth revealed to us in Scripture alone.
