As Christians, it is easy to fall into the mentality that growing in maturity as a Christian means I must somehow go out and obtain the qualities and attitudes I lack. This morning, God’s Word shares with us a rather stunning realization. The Bible teaches that Christians mature as we come to a greater realization of what we already have in Christ. The gospel transforms us not because it’s a message about internal transformation but rather Christ’s substitution, who has done for us and secured for us what we could never secure for ourselves. So, the hard work of Christian growth is this: to think less about ourselves, and more of Jesus and his performance for us.

Before the disciples understood everything, before they felt ready, Jesus calls them into a relationship with himself. The reason is simple. A disciple is not defined by how much they know or how much they are able to prove themselves. A disciple, rather, is defined by who they follow and learn from. This morning in God’s Word we hear Jesus make a gospel call to believers to follow him so he can train them to share the gospel. His Word changes us, too, and trains us to send us on mission for him. The gospel call always gives what it commands – trust in the Savior we follow.

To be a disciple of Jesus means to learn from Jesus. But before we can understand what a disciple of Jesus does, we must first understand how it is that we become a disciple of Jesus. It’s not through self-improvement; it’s not by moral effort; it’s not through sincerity. Apart from the Spirit’s work we are dead in our sins and in need of life. Through the Spirit who works through the Word of God, those who once were dead are brought to life to be children of the one true God. Just as God raised up a vast, living army from dry bones, God continues to breathe new life and new hope into his church through his Word and sacraments.

This morning we don’t hear God ask “Do you have what it takes?” but instead we hear God say, “So, you think you don’t have what it takes to be a missionary? Let me show you how you have exactly what it takes.” Because of the forgiveness that Christ won for us on the cross, you have exactly what it takes. You have Jesus and you have his Word.

When we experience the helplessness and frustrations of seeing the seed of the Word scorched or snatched or matted flat, sowers of the gospel are tempted to wonder if the Word really works. So today God promises that the Word always accomplishes its purpose. It is efficacious on its own, without our help, and will go out for the joy of man and the Lord’s renown. So, we do our job and proclaim the Word, and we don’t try to do God’s job. We may plant the seed, we may water the seedlings, but God is the one who makes it grow. God’s Word will always do its work!

From the beginning of time, God has provided rest for his creation. He blessed the seventh day and set it apart so that people might learn to find rest in God alone. When mankind decides to dictate their relationship with God, they will find the truth hidden from them and therefore they will never find God’s rest. But Jesus invites us to find real rest in his truth, which connects us to Jesus that we might learn from him that he is gentle and humble in heart. The yoke of discipleship lets us learn how Jesus loves sinners, washes us clean from our past, and wraps us in forgiveness and rest. The real rest that we need.

Fear often creeps into our hearts, especially when we think about standing before God. John answers that fear with the comfort that God has given us his Spirit and has made his love to known to us in Jesus Christ, the Savior of the World. Because God’s perfect love for us in Christ covers our sins, we can face the day of judgment with confidence instead of fear. And that same love that removes our fear also moves us to love others, because he first loved us.

The love that the Father has graciously lavished on us has made us to be children of God. That is what we are! And because that’s true, we are heirs of the kingdom of our Father. What we deserved was to remain sons of wrath against God, but the love of God broke through the darkness of our sin and called us to be children of God by means of a promise: My Son became like you so that you will be like him. This is the love that God has lavished on us, that we should be called the children of God. But because we are God’s children, because Jesus is our brother, when he comes, we will be like him.
