  • The Old House & The Happy Family 🏡🐌 | Cozy Bedtime Stories by Hans Christian Andersen
    2026/09/26

Welcome to Chapter & Pillow: Where Stories Drift Into Sleep. I’m Kathleen, and here you’ll find timeless stories, read by me, and chosen carefully to help you relax and drift off to sleep.

Tonight, we settle in with two lesser-known stories by Hans Christian Andersen. In The Old House, a quiet, time-worn home becomes the center of a tender story about friendship, memories, and the passage of time. Then, in The Happy Family, Andersen turns his attention to a very unusual little household of snails with his characteristic mix of whimsy, humor, and fairy-tale strangeness.

If you enjoy old-fashioned storytelling, literary bedtime tales, and a calm way to unwind at the end of the day, I think you'll love these two gentle classic stories.

🌙 Before we begin, if Chapter & Pillow helps you relax, I’d be so grateful if you would take a moment to rate or review the show. It really helps new listeners find us.

So get comfortable, let the day fade, and enjoy tonight’s stories.

    • Hans Christian Andersen had a wickedly sharp sense of humor. In tonight's second story, The Happy Family (1848), he uses a delusional family of garden snails to roast the wealthy nobles and smug middle class of his day. These snails genuinely believe the universe revolves around their weed patch, even bragging that the whole forest was planted just for them and that their ancestors were boiled and eaten on silver platters just because it sounds elite. It’s a brilliant, witty critique of how people will romanticize their own exploitation just to feel superior.

    2026/09/19

Welcome to Chapter & Pillow: Where Stories Drift Into Sleep. I’m Kathleen, and here you’ll find timeless stories, read by me, and chosen carefully to help you relax and drift off to sleep.

Before we settle in, if Chapter & Pillow has become part of your bedtime routine, I’d be so grateful if you would take a moment to rate or review the show. It’s a simple way to help other listeners find their way here. Thank you.

Tonight, we return to The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, part 10, with chapters 18 and 19. Spring is beginning to transform Misselthwaite Manor. Mary finds Dickon surrounded by his familiar collection of creatures, while Colin awakens with a new curiosity about the world beyond his room. Plans are beginning to take shape, and for the first time, the possibility of something quite different seems to be waiting just outside.

So settle in, get comfortable, and let Burnett's beautiful descriptions of the English countryside carry you gently to sleep.

The Author’s Story: Frances Hodgson Burnett was an enthusiastic gardener herself. At her home in England, Great Maytham Hall, she spent hours outdoors among the flowers and greenery, and the old walled garden there is believed to have helped inspire the garden at the heart of this story.

  • The Miraculous Pitcher 🏺 | A Gentle Bedtime Story by Nathaniel Hawthorne
    2026/09/12

Welcome to Chapter & Pillow: Where Stories Drift Into Sleep. I’m Kathleen, and here you’ll find timeless stories, read by me, and chosen carefully to help you relax and drift off to sleep.

Before we settle in, if Chapter & Pillow is helping you fall asleep, I'd be so grateful if you could take a moment to rate or review the show. It’s a simple way to help other listeners find their way here and to help my podcast grow. Thank you!

Tonight’s story is The Miraculous Pitcher by Nathaniel Hawthorne, a gentle retelling of the ancient tale of Baucis and Philemon.

In a quiet cottage at the edge of a village, an elderly couple welcomes two weary travelers when no one else will. Their home is humble and their supper is simple, but they offer what they have with kindness. Before the evening is over, however, it becomes clear that their visitors are not quite what they seem, and an ordinary earthen pitcher holds a little magic of its own.

It’s a story of the unexpected rewards of opening your door to a stranger.

The Author’s Story: Nathaniel Hawthorne included The Miraculous Pitcher in his collection of Greek myths retold for younger readers. Rather than simply translating the old tales, Hawthorne reshaped them in his own storytelling style, bringing ancient myths into the world of nineteenth-century readers.

Tonight, wherever you’re listening from across the world, I’m glad you found your way here. Settle in, get comfortable, and let the story carry you toward sleep.

  • The Secret Garden: A Storm at Misselthwaite 🌧️ | Bedtime Story
    2026/09/05

Welcome to Chapter & Pillow: Where Stories Drift Into Sleep. I’m Kathleen, and here you’ll find timeless stories, read by me, and chosen carefully to help you relax and drift off to sleep.

Tonight, we're returning to The Secret Garden for Part 9, with Chapters 16 and 17.

A storm is brewing at Misselthwaite Manor, and this time, it has nothing to do with the weather. Colin is accustomed to having everyone around him give in to his every demand. Mary, however, has other ideas. And sometimes a good friend is exactly the person who refuses to tell us what we want to hear. Before these two chapters are over, Mary and Colin will find their way from friends, to enemies, and perhaps back again.

So get comfortable, settle in, and let the day's thoughts fade into the background as we return once more to the quiet halls, hidden rooms, and growing secrets of Misselthwaite Manor.

Fluff your pillow and enjoy tonight's story.

    • Behind the Story: Frances Hodgson Burnett wrote this book while processing the tragic loss of her 16-year-old son, Lionel, who passed away in her arms from illness. The character of Colin, the sickly boy hidden away inside the mansion, was born out of her deep, maternal heartbreak and her desire to see a child heal.

So relax, fluff your pillow, settle in, and enjoy tonight's story.

  • The Princess and the Hedge-Pig 🦔 | E. Nesbit Bedtime Story for Sleep
    2026/08/15

Welcome to Chapter & Pillow: Where Stories Drift Into Sleep, where bedtime stories are always human.

Tonight, settle in as I read E. Nesbit's sweet, but unusual fairy tale, The Princess and the Hedge-Pig, and let the day's thoughts quietly fade as you relax and drift toward sleep.

In tonight's story, a forgotten invitation to a royal christening leaves one fairy feeling decidedly unwelcome. What follows involves a princess, an unusual enchantment, and some rather prickly consequences. It’s a charming, whimsical fairy tale that reminds us things aren’t always quite what they seem, and that having someone in your corner can make all the difference.

    • The Author's Story: E. Nesbit was an English writer whose imaginative children's stories helped shape modern fantasy literature. Rather than setting all of her tales in distant fairy-tale worlds, she became known for mixing magic with the everyday lives of ordinary children. Her best-known works include The Railway Children, Five Children and It, and The Phoenix and the Carpet.

What Mary finds at the end of the corridor may be the manor's most surprising mystery yet.
