あらすじ・解説

From the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, here is the universally acclaimed novel - winner of the Booker Prize and the basis for an award-winning film.

This is Kazuo Ishiguro's profoundly compelling portrait of Stevens, the perfect butler, and of his fading, insular world in post-World War II England. Stevens, at the end of three decades of service at Darlington Hall, spending a day on a country drive, embarks as well on a journey through the past in an effort to reassure himself that he has served humanity by serving the "great gentleman", Lord Darlington. But lurking in his memory are doubts about the true nature of Lord Darlington's "greatness", and much graver doubts about the nature of his own life.

Most excellent

綺麗に話してくれるのでとても聞き取りやすかったです。途中飽きてしまった部分もありましたが、最後はかなり衝撃的な展開でした。プロフェッショナリズムと人間性、どちらを大事にすべきなのか考えさせられます。

A masterpiece in Downton Abbey style

this book has many similarities to the tv show downton abbey - similar location, era, and lifestyle. But it adds an incredibly complex main character, amazingly portrayed, and a riveting story.

Superb book

Wonderfully narrated. This book was very soothing to listen to. Superb job of dealing with little details and ponderings but with depth; a slow pace but not a bit boring. An accomplishment not a lot of writers can achieve. Well done!

Beautiful and ever relevant

Ishiguro explores grief and the conflict between professional and personal dignity through the eyes of an aging British butler in this breakthrough 1988 novel. As a traditional butler, Mr. Stevens is a living relic even in the mid 1950s, but even now it is easy to relate to him. As he looks back on his glory days, he realizes that his triumphs don’t seem to shine as brightly now that he sees the consequences of his mistakes on his own life and the lives around him. Smith does an excellent job narrating, maintaining a good pace and capturing Mr. Stevens’s old-fashioned diction and cool, professional detachment. I loved this book and believe that got a great deal from it. I think that you will, too.

A beautiful book that kept putting me to sleep.

The narration is so soothing that it look me probably 20 starts to get through each segment of the book without falling asleep. I am glad I stuck with it as the book is very moving and beautiful in it's simplicity - just like the English country side the author describes Stephens viewing on his tour.

4.33 stars

This is a novel of introspection. There's not a lot of action, but this novel doesn't need it. The story is captivating and the narration is excellent. Anyone who tries it will probably like it. Overall rating: 4.33 stars
