あらすじ・解説

Brought to you by Penguin.

When he hears her favourite Beatles song, Toru Watanabe recalls his first love Naoko, the girlfriend of his best friend Kizuki. Immediately he is transported back almost 20 years to his student days in Tokyo, adrift in a world of uneasy friendships, casual sex, passion, loss and desire - to a time when an impetuous young woman called Midori marches into his life and he has to choose between the future and the past.

Nostalgia

Autobiographical and full of memories of growing up. The depth and ease of his narration are amazing.

misogynistic and gross

Misogynistic sad-girl tropes all over this book. For me, it missed all the marks to be the enchanting coming-out-of-age novel I was expecting. I recommend it for lovers of Bukowski who like female characters to be submissive and sex scenes to be gross and vulgar.

Poor narrating

Why is the same narrator reading out both the main character's and all the girls' lines? I find his voice/accent annoying as the MC already, but a male reading out a woman's lines sounds jarring on another level and is distracting me from the actual story.

An odd love story

I enjoy murakami books and I waited a while for this one to be narrated. Unfortunately I wasn't a major fan of the narration but it didn't distract from the story once I got used to it. The story is as weird as ever, but interesting! I was intently waiting to see what happens next so that's a good sign. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for an off kilter love story

Great book

I only read this because it’s meant to be on of Harry Styles’ favourite books. Although it is exceptionally well written, it’s too dark and twisted for my taste.

It was extremely atmospheric and once you start reading it’s hard to stop. I don’t know if I would like to read from this author again. Maybe something less unsettling.

Weird voice at first but it grew on me

brilliant story the narrator's voice took a little getting used to but it was great to hear Murakami's work whilst painting.

Not bad.

I only listened to this book because it is on a ‘100 books……’ poster. Haven’t read anything by the author before but from reading reviews I had the impression it may be a bit odd. However, it was just an average story, nothing gripping but it did hold my attention. Not sure about the ending though.

Skip the Audiobook & read the book for this one. Trust me.

Adam Sims has a pretentious tone to his voice that I don’t think fits the experience of Norwegian Wood.
Toru Watanabe wasn’t likeable sounding like he had a stick wedged up his backside throughout each line when I think he was just meant to come across aloof, uncertain & young.

Adam Sims voice for Midori was almost sexist, the way he portrayed her made her sound vapid & annoying which didn’t match how she was written in the book. I felt that discredited Midori’s character and what she contributed to the story.

Norwegian Wood overall is stunningly written, translated with so much care beautifully but I wouldn’t recommend this audiobook, Adam Sims and the spin he’s put on it doesn’t do it justice.
I think the lack of ratings on this book reflects on the bad voice casting when it is such a famous and loved book.

What a cop out

Indecisive cunt had to rely on the author to give him an easy way out at the end, bloody hell.
