あらすじ・解説

Just after midnight, a snowdrift stopped the Orient Express in its tracks. The luxurious train was surprisingly full for the time of the year. But by the morning there was one passenger fewer. An American lay dead in his compartment, stabbed a dozen times, his door locked from the inside.

批評家のレビュー

"Need it be said, the little grey cells solve once more the seemingly insoluble. Mrs Christie makes an improbable tale very real, and keeps her readers enthralled and guessing to the end." ( Times Literary Supplement)

The only real Poirot David Suchet

Would you consider the audio edition of Murder on the Orient Express to be better than the print version?

Yes, because of Suchet. He is the real deal as Hercule Poirot. I have one other audio version of this book, but it does not compare to this one.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Murder on the Orient Express?

At the end when Poirot Show`s everyone why he is Poirot.

What does David Suchet bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Everything! I first listened to a Hercule Poirot mystery red by David Suchet about one year ago, when I listened to Death on the Nile. I was smiling the whole time listening to the book. Suchet is a great actor, you can really hear it. He brings every character to life in a great way, not just Poirot.

David Suchet.. The one and only Poirot

Brilliant writing by the greatest mystery writer of all time, narrated by the best... David Suchet. This man is a genius. He makes all the characters come to life and hearing the voice of the one and only Poirot is just brilliant!!

Perhaps knowing the story made me biased

It's really hard to know if I would have liked the book more (and given it 5 stars all around) had I not known the end (I've seen an old movie version and the latest one). It is not identical to the movie, but close enough. I think it moved a bit slow, but it is a good mystery. The performance is superb. There are a number of versions and I selected this one by listening to the sample of each. I was most pleased with my choice. Suchet did a great job of different voices and accents, including the female voices.

Accents somehow annoying but turned out touching

The story was twisted and obscured, suddenly solved at the very end without much scrutiny action.

Suchet reading Poirot - a perfect partnership.

David Suchet is practically synonymous with Agatha Christie's Poirot, so it's simply wonderful that this audiobook is read by Suchet. His characterisations are perfect, subtle and entertaining, which make these audiobooks great listening. This tale of murder and mystery is enthralling listening, so settle in - you're in for a real treat.

The character of the dectivie

Have you listened to any of David Suchet’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Very favourable

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Although I did not - I wanted to glisten in one settings. I fell asleep- late in the night and had to rewind the final sections.

Just keep the books coming.

David Suchet is marvellous

Would you listen to Murder on the Orient Express again? Why?

This audio book is one that I could listen to again and again mainly because of Suchet's amazing performance as Poirot and an assortment of characters from different nationalities. It's a blast and I get the impression that Suchet had a jolly time doing it.

Have you listened to any of David Suchet’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Suchet is really at the top of his game here. I've also enjoyed The Mysterious Affair at Styles, which I've listened to multiple times.

Any additional comments?

The Murder on the Orient Express isn't one of Christie's more believable puzzles but Christie was a superb storyteller and with Suchet in the driver's seat here, the ride is worth every penny.

Wonderful

If you could sum up Murder on the Orient Express in three words, what would they be?

Captivating, thoughtful, enjoyable.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Murder on the Orient Express?

Mrs. Hubbard - just a quirky character.

What does David Suchet bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Everything. Loved Suchet in the series but hadn't realised his skills in bringing a book to life before. Such a wide variety of accents and voices - really wonderful. Such nuances can easily be missed in the book.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

That would give too much away.

Any additional comments?

Can't recommend this audio enough. If you love Suchet then you can't go wrong plus this has some subtle but important differences to the TV version.

Wonderfully narrated!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, I already did! It's a great detective, albeit a little old fashioned in places. For me that was part of the charm, though.

What does David Suchet bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

It was the first time I read a book from this author and although it was good, I feel David Suchet's narrating just made the book for me. Wonderful.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laugh, often, and loudly!

Perfect Poirot !

Everyone knows David Suchet can do a perfect voice for Poirot from the TV series, but perhaps less well known is that he's a great narrator and has a whole range of other men's and women's voices and accents which he can deliver with equal eloquence - you're never in any doubt about who's talking and the story really comes to life. A thouroughly enjoyable listen :)

First-rate reading of a mystery classic...

This unabridged reading of one of Agatha Christie’s best-known and best-loved books is great fun. David Suchet, the perfect TV Poirot, here gets to show off the amazing range of his acting talent. There are about 15 characters in the book, half of them women, from a variety of different countries and Suchet manages to sustain a different voice and characterisation for each. Yes, occasionally he goes a bit OTT (the Russian Princess for instance) but that adds to the enjoyment – Suchet understands that Christie’s books are first and foremost light-hearted fun.

Christie shows off her usual winning formula here – a baffling crime, a limited number of suspects, each interviewed by Poirot, and then the dénouement as Poirot reveals both murderer and method. What stops the books from becoming repetitive is that there is usually an unexpected twist and this book is no exception. Once you know whodunit, it’s easy to look back and see that Christie, more perhaps than any other crime-writer, plays fair with the reader – all the clues are there, we see everything Poirot sees, but can we work it out before he does?

This is a first-rate reading of a deserved classic of the mystery genre. Enjoy!

Ingenious locked room classic murder from another planet or pro-EU argument

This is a story from another space-time continuum (I hope). With strong links to the Lindberg baby kidnap/murder, which had happened not long before this novel was written, Christie comes up with the best "isolated situation" murder ever. Train stuck in Yugoslavia, inter-war, snowdrifts like nobody's business- no outside contact- you can even feel Poirot longing for the iPhone that doesn't yet exist, the Internet searches.
But this is a world I am glad to see gone - of class distinction, ridiculous snobbery, stereotypes (the English are like this, the Italians/Swedes/Austrians like that, the French somewhat different (don't mention Belgians!) White Russians and US citizens- all packaged by "breeding"/ aka wealth with a posh accent, for Heavens' sake!
There's a vague hint that a couple of characters might have Jewish ancestry- by the time this book was published the death knoll was beginning to toll for Europe's Jews- did the Hungarian countess survive?
Glad I am that it all happens in an alien English universe of ill-educated rich folk who haven't two neurones to make a synapse. A better argument for remaining in Europe is hard to find!

Riveting. A one man cast of talent.

Amazing. loved, loved, loved it.

David Suchet was impressive putting on a display of talent in his delivery of different voices.

The story, as with any Agatha Christie offering, was beautifully written and pacey.

I didn't want this to be over.

Not what I was expecting

but then I did go into reading this without knowing too much about it at all, as one does when reading a mystery.
While there was a choice of narrators for this audiobook I am very glad I picked David Suchet, some narrators get boring or annoying & I did not have that problem at any point during this story.

A Classic Murder portrayed Fantastically

What did you like most about Murder on the Orient Express?

The novel is so wonderfully played out, with the classic reveal at the end, the hidden pasts and deadly secrets. A fantastic listen, extremely entertaining

What did you like best about this story?

The novel of "Murder on the Orient Express" is far superior to the televised version. The original capture Poirot's own love of Justice not the law. It was a fascinating study of what is right and what is lawful.

Have you listened to any of David Suchet’s other performances? How does this one compare?

David Suchet is the embodiment of Poirot and his performance brings this novel to life in a new and revitalising way.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely! It was fascinating and reverting.

great as usual

very easy to listen to. at times I found myself getting confused as to whether Poirot or the other French character was speaking... but that's acceptable, given they both have similar accents :-)

An interesting take on whether vigilante revenge and violence is ever justified....

Poirot at his best

David Suchet is Poirot, but he is more, he narrates this fantastic Agatha Christie story as if it is a dramatisation.
If you like Poirot, you'll love this narration. If you have never read Agatha Christie, then this is a great place to start.
Well worth it. I'm ready to listen again, to see if I can pick the clues when Poirot does.

The story is one to stand throughout the ages, and the performants of David Suchet made it all the more amassing. Highly recommended.
