You can experience both modern and Edo -period Japan here. This kind of place is quite rare even in Tokyo. 街並みは江戸時代、空を見上げれば、2012年完成の東京スカイツリーがどこからでも見える浅草。
ここは日本の現代と江戸情緒が同時に感じられる、東京でも数少ない場所です。
浅草は、都内最古のお寺である浅草寺の門前町として、江戸時代から栄えました。
雷門から続く仲見世通り商店街は、浅草寺境内を掃除する近くの人々が、参道にお店を出すことを許されたのが始まりで、現在は約90店舗が軒を並べます。
江戸時代から昭和にかけての浅草は、見世物小屋や映画館なども立ち並び、芸能の町としても時代の最先端をいく歓楽街でした。
