シャーロック・ホームズ（1859-1930）はスコットランドの首都エディンバラ生まれ。エディンバラ大学医学部を卒業し、ポーツマスやロンドンで開業するが、患者があまり来ず、暇な時間を利用して小説を書き始める。1891年から「ストランド」誌で連載を始めたシャーロック・ホームズものの短編が大好評を博す。ドイル自身は歴史小説のほうに関心があったため、1893年「最後の事件」でホームズを行方不明にしてシリーズを終わらせようとしたが、読者の強い要望に押されて、1903年ホームズを復活させ、1927年の最後の作品まで4つの長編と56の短編、計60本のホームズ作品を著した。パイプをくゆらせつつ、わずかなヒントから鮮やかな推理を披露する名探偵ホームズと、親友で事件の語り手であるワトソン博士との絶妙なコンビは、現在に至るまで「シャーロキアン」と呼ばれる熱烈な愛好者を多く生んでいる。「青いガーネット」は、「ストランド」誌1892年1月号に掲載されたクリスマス向けの短編で、後に、短編集「シャーロック・ホームズの冒険」に収められた。ホームズの名高い推理法と独創的な話の展開が楽しめる作品である。
