Eze is single, a cautious rebel from his university days whose arrival soon upsets the balance in Obinna’s life. In a world where men are constantly under surveillance and subject to the whims of powerful women, more than Obinna’s ordered and accustomed routine might be on the line.

When Zikora, a DC lawyer from Nigeria, tells her equally high-powered lover that she’s pregnant, he abandons her. But it’s Zikora’s demanding, self-possessed mother, in town for the birth, who makes Zikora feel like a lonely little girl all over again. Stunned by the speed with which her ideal life fell apart, she turns to reflecting on her mother’s painful past and struggle for dignity. Preparing for motherhood, Zikora begins to see more clearly what her own mother wants for her, for her new baby, and for herself.

In Purple Hibiscus, she recounts the story of a young Nigerian girl searching for freedom. Although her father is greatly respected within their community, 15-year-old Kambili knows a frighteningly strict and abusive side to this man. In many ways, she and her family lead a privileged life, but Kambili and her brother, Jaja, are often punished for failing to meet their father’s expectations. After visiting her aunt and cousins, Kambili dreams of being part of a loving family.

Cosa significa essere femminista oggi? Per prima cosa reclamare la propria importanza, di individuo e di donna insieme; reclamare il diritto all'uguaglianza senza se e senza ma. E cosa significa essere una madre femminista? Non smettere di essere una donna, una professionista, una persona, e condividere alla pari la responsabilità con il proprio compagno. Mostrare a una figlia le trappole tese da chi la vuole ingabbiare per mezzo della violenza, fisica o psicologica, in un ruolo predefinito, e spiegarle che quel ruolo non ha nessun valore reale e che potrà scegliere di essere ciò che vorrà.

La distanza tra la Nigeria e gli Stati Uniti è enorme, e non solo in termini di chilometri. Partire alla volta di un mondo nuovo abbandonando la propria vita è difficile, anche se quel mondo ha i tratti di un paradiso, ma per Ifemelu è necessario. Il suo paese è asfittico, l'università in sciopero. E poi, in fondo, sa che ad accoglierla troverà zia Uju e che Obinze, il suo ragazzo dai tempi del liceo, presto la raggiungerà.
