題名の『十二夜』とは、クリスマスから十二日目(つまり1月6日の夜のことで、イエス生誕に際して当方の三博士が訪ねてきた日とされている。西洋では、新年祝いの締めとなる盛大な宴が催され、この劇はその余興で初演されたと古くは考えられていたようだ。 ただ、単ににぎやかなだけでなく、十二夜には、寂しい冬を前にした最後の華やかさ、というイメージもある。
