Bitter Lips, Sweet Heart is a unique collection of romantic poetry first assembled by a group of young male college students who got together to read poetry and drink tea every week, thinking themselves spurned romantics and talented poets. Most of the original selections have been forgotten, and the collection has been updated for this simple release with a sense of irony and sheepishness in mature adulthood. May its angst, irony, lust, and innocent affection amuse and entertain you today, just as it did the four nerdy boys who assembled it to communicate.

NOTES: "My Last Duchess" puts in the mouth of a Duke of Ferrara, a typical husband and art patron of the Renaissance, a description of his last wife, whose happy nature and universal kindliness were a perpetual affront to his exacting self-predominance, and whose suppression, by his command, has made the vacancy he is now, in his interview with the envoy for a new match, taking precaution to fill more acceptably. Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning shared one of the great literary and romantic marriages of the 19th century, eloping to Italy to escape the objections of her family. Although they both wrote poetry throughout their married life, this collection was selected and edited after the death of both writers and there is no evidence that they themselves ever intended these poems to be a single collection. - Summary by Alan Mapstone

"In considering the question of publishing these letters, which are all that ever passed between my father and mother, for after their marriage they were never separated, it seemed to me that my only alternatives were to allow them to be published or to destroy them. I might, indeed, have left the matter to the decision of others after my death, but that would be evading a responsibility which I feel that I ought to accept. "Ever since my mother's death these letters were kept by my father in a certain inlaid box, into which they exactly fitted, and where they have always rested, letter beside...

As read with haunting resonance by John Alban Coughlan, Robert Browning’s enduring classic The Pied Piper of Hamelin emerges anew—more vivid, more chilling, and more unsettlingly relevant than ever before. This timeless tale, steeped in folklore and shadowed by moral consequence, stands as a prophetically horrific warning of what unfolds when avarice and greed eclipse honor and humanity. Through Coughlan’s richly atmospheric narration, the medieval town of Hamelin springs to life in all its uneasy splendor—its desperation, its deception, and its ultimate reckoning.

The language of Poetry is an art that most of us attempt at some point in our lives. Although its commonplace exposure has been somewhat marginalised in today's often fast-paced lives we all recognise good verse that can empathise with our thoughts or open us up to experience new things in new ways, to better understand and to enjoy the many strands of our lives.

Robert Browning was fascinated by people—not only people of his own day, but also people who had lived in the remote past. Five of his famous dramatic monologues are spoken by characters from the ancient Classical world: a Greek goddess (Artemis), a Roman senator (in “Imperante Augusto Natus Est—”), an Arab physician (Karshish), a Greek poet (Cleon), and the last surviving eyewitness of Jesus Christ (in “A Death in the Desert”). They probe many different questions, especially regarding the transition from paganism to Christianity.

In Childe Roland, the title poem, Robert Browning weaves a rich tapestry of surreal imagery inspired by his experiences in Italy. Drawing from an ancient tower in the Carrara Mountains, a captivating painting in Paris, and a striking horse depicted on a tapestry in his Florentine home, Browning channels the haunting words from Shakespeares King Lear Childe Roland to the dark tower came. This evocative poem invites listeners into a realm reminiscent of the epic The Song of Roland and the legendary quests of Arthurian knights, where the journey into the unknown is fraught with challenges and the...
