Dos hombres Mason y Malemute Kid, en compañía de la esposa india de Mason, atraviesan en trineo las tierras de Klondike a temperaturas de más de cincuenta grados bajo cero y con tanta escasez de comida que los perros están desfalleciendo y en algunos casos volviéndose peligrosos para los propios viajeros.

"Diario de un loco", publicada en 1834, es una historia muy corta, de apenas viente páginas, pero que se compensa con lo hilarante y extraño de su contenido, muy al estilo de Gogol. La historia es escrita a manera de diario íntimo contado en primera persona y ordenado cronológicamente por un funcionario público, llamado Aksenti Ivanovich (42 años) y de un apellido extraño, según comentario de uno de los personajes. El diario inicia un tal 3 de octubre, no se precisa el año y se va narrando muy escasamente de lo que le va sucediendo al personaje.

"La caída de la Casa Usher" es la quintaesencia del cuento gótico: una casa embrujada, un paisaje lúgubre, dos hermanos gemelos, una enfermedad misteriosa... Todos los elementos del género son fácilmente identificables y, sin embargo, parte del terror que inspira esta historia se debe a su vaguedad; no podemos decir a ciencia cierta en qué parte del mundo o exactamente cuándo tiene lugar la historia. Estamos solos con el narrador en este espacio embrujado, y ni nosotros ni el narrador sabemos por qué.

Relato enigmático y poético que la autora lo reescribió muchísimas veces. Presenta a personajes en un momento de su existencia, que considera esencial, el azar determina que un pequeño gesto, en este caso el muchacho enfocando hacia la tierra por aburrimiento, pueda decidir cosas importantes.

Esta pequeña historia humorística, que oyó Mark Twain en un campamento minero, fue parte de sus primeras conferencias, y más tarde se convertiría en su primera publicación en un diario.

Con Poe nacería el terror como género, fruto de sus obsesiones y de su corta vida errante. Transmutó el gótico alemán utilizando las claves del Romanticismo, anticipándose un siglo a los miedos y a los deseos más íntimos del hombre moderno. Las maldiciones ancestrales, las fuerzas ingentes y desatadas de la naturaleza, son elementos con los que el autor tratará de contagiar al lector para enfrentarlo al pavor de sus miedos más profundos.

El relato "El gato negro" se publicó por vez primera en el periódico United States Saturday Post, en 1843. El gato como símbolo del mal tiene una larga tradición en Occidente. En la supersticiosa Edad Media llegó incluso a representar a Satanás al visitar la tierra; era el animal de compañía de las brujas. En el romanticismo se puso de moda como animal literario por excelencia, por su aire misterioso, sus ojos relucientes y su aparente serenidad. El propio autor del relato, Edgar Allan Poe, tuvo en casa ese animal doméstico.
