Der Spätherbst in Berlin hat gewöhnlich noch einige schöne Tage. Die Sonne tritt freundlich aus dem Gewölk hervor, und schnell verdampft die Nässe in der lauen Luft, welche durch die Straßen weht. Dann sieht man eine lange Reihe, buntgemischt Elegants, Bürger mit der Hausfrau und den lieben Kleinen in Sonntagskleidern, Geistliche, Jüdinnen, Referendare, Freudenmädchen, Professoren, Putzmacherinnen, Tänzer, Offiziere usw. durch die Linden nach dem Tiergarten ziehen.

Hoffmanns berühmteste spätromantische Erzählung aus den "Nachtstücken" von 1817 thematisiert die Nachtseiten eines bürgerlichen Lebens und beschreibt lange vor den Erkenntnissen der Psychoanalyse den vergeblichen Versuch des männlichen Individuums, Ängste, Träume, Wünsche und Fantasien zu verdrängen. Im Sandmann hält der Student Nathanael eine geniale Erfindung, den "Automaten" Olimpia, für die verständnisvollere und liebreizendere Gefährtin, wodurch er die Beziehung zu seiner Verlobten Clara zerstört.

Der Roman spielt im Paris des Jahres 1680, und beginnt damit, dass jemand in das Haus des Fräuleins von Scuderi will, einer alten Frau, die für Adelige Geschichten schreibt, in denen diese die Helden sind. Die Zofe Mariniere hat Angst, weil es schon spät ist, und weil der Diener, Bapiste, bei seiner Schwester auf Hochzeit ist. Die Angst besteht nicht zu Unrecht, denn zu jener Zeit gab es in Paris viele heimtückische Giftmorde, und die Kriminalität in den Straßen war sehr hoch.

In diesem Kunstmärchen aus der Sammlung Die Serapionsbrüder porträtiert der Autor in den Märchenkindern Marie und Fritz die Kinder Friedrich und Clara seines Freundes Hitzig. Auch Hitzigs ältere Tochter Eugenie kommt als ältere Schwester Luise im Märchen vor. Auf einer späteren Bearbeitung dieses Stoffes durch Alexandre Dumas d. Ä. basiert Tschaikowskis weltberühmtes Ballett "Der Nussknacker". Marie, Tochter des Medizinalrats Stahlbaum, entdeckt am Weihnachtsabend auf dem Gabentisch einen Nussknacker.

In tiefes Leid versenkt saß Fräulein Ännchen einsam in ihrem Zimmer als die Türe aufging und niemand anders hereintrat, als der Herr Amandus von Nebelstern. Ganz Reue und Scham vergoss Fräulein Ännchen einen Tränenstrom und bat in den kläglichsten Tönen: "O mein herzlieber Amandus, verzeihe doch nur, was ich dir in meiner Verblendung geschrieben! Aber ich war ja verhext und bin es wohl noch. Rette mich, rette mich mein Amandus! – Gelb sehe ich aus und garstig, das ist Gott zu klagen, aber mein treues Herz habe ich bewahrt und will keine Königsbraut sein".

"Don Juan" – Eine fabelhafte Begebenheit, die sich mit einem reisenden Enthusiasten zugetragen. Hoffmanns spiritistisches Tête-à-têtes mit Donna Anna in einer Theaterloge hat die Wirkungsgeschichte von Mozarts Don Giovanni bis heute nachhaltig beeinflusst. 1813, ein Vierteljahrhundert nach der Uraufführung, schwelgt Hoffmann in der Vergötterung des Mozart’schen Meisterwerks. Er ist von der Musik fasziniert – und hat Probleme mit dem Libretto.

These same traditions continue to develop and influence social and political processes today.

African American literature is the body of literature produced in the United States by writers of African descent. It begins with the works of such late 18th-century writers as Phillis Wheatley. Before the high point of enslaved people narratives, African-American literature was dominated by autobiographical spiritual narratives. The genre known as slave narratives in the 19th century were accounts by people who had generally escaped from slavery, about their journeys to freedom and ways they claimed their lives.
