In this haunting poem, a guest on his way to a wedding reception is stopped by the Ancient Mariner. With his "glittering eye" he transfixes the guest and then relates a compelling tale of a sea voyage fraught with strange happenings. The Mariner tells of journeying through tyrannous storms to ice mast-high, through mist and snow to the deadly inertia of the doldrums. There are unearthly visitations, ill omens, and supernatural happenings - all leading to the revelation of the Mariner's strange fate.

A bird of good omen is murdered. A fickle crew is punished by supernatural, spectral beings. A skeletal ship is sighted moving against the wind and tide. The figure of Death along with a singular, gruesome companion man the fiendish craft. And as they draw closer, it becomes clear that the two play at dice for the soul of the ancient mariner. The result is nothing short of cataclysmic.

England has produced many wonderful poets. Samuel Taylor Coleridge is safe amongst their number. As well as a poet he was also known for his skills as a critic and philosopher. With his great friend William Wordsworth they began what is now seen as the Romantic Movement. Contributing such great works as 'Rime Of The Ancient Mariner', 'Kubla Kahn' and his opus Biographia Literatia to the English language ensures his place in our history.
