"The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" is Samuel Taylor Coleridge's haunting ballad about guilt, punishment, and redemption. The poem follows a sailor who kills an albatross, bringing a curse upon his ship and crew. As terrible events unfold—stagnant seas, ghostly visions, and the death of his companions—the Mariner is forced to confront the consequences of his cruelty. Through suffering, he learns to appreciate the beauty and sanctity of all living things. Rich in vivid imagery and supernatural atmosphere, the poem explores themes of sin, nature, isolation, and spiritual awakening.

In this collection, the authors were striving for a natural and unaffected style of verse that sought to avoid the elaborate structures and artifice that they considered had characterized much of the poetry of the 18th century. Of the 23 poems, only four are by Coleridge, including "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner", which is the most famous poem in the collection. The most notable contribution by Wordsworth is the concluding poem, "Tintern Abbey".

The poem relates the experiences of a sailor who has returned from a long sea voyage. The mariner stops a man who is on the way to a wedding ceremony and begins to narrate a story. The wedding guest's reaction turns from bemusement to impatience to fear to fascination as the mariner's story progresses, as can be seen in the language style: Coleridge uses narrative techniques such as personification and repetition to create a sense of danger, the supernatural, or serenity, depending on the mood in different parts of the poem.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge was born on October 21st, 1772, in Ottery St Mary in Devon. As a child he was an early and devoted reader, and after being schooled at Christ's Hospital, a charity school, he attended, from 1791, Jesus College, Cambridge, and the following year won the Browne Gold Medal for an ode on the slave trade.
